40th birthday party. How far in advance should I be giving out the invitations to our family and friends? His birthday falls over the Christmas break so I have booked a party for the last weekend in November.

lf you know the date you could send invitations any time now so people can put it in the diary but ask for people to RSVP nearer the time (September / October) and then contact everyone again in early September to ask for RSVPs if they haven't already said.

Definitely start letting people know the date and to inform that a party is planned for that day. Proper invites can be sent nearer the day.
