How amny children do you need for a party to "work" and how big can the age range be?

DS2 is in reception and his 5th birthday is coming up. At his request I have booked a pond dipping party at the local nature reserve.

When it comes to sending out the invites it appears there are only 3 children from school he wants to invite. I've asked several times over several weeks and the list has never changed.

Oh well fine I thought, we'll have those 3, plus 2 DS's and 8-10 children who are friends from outside school and whose parents I know well. That will work, because we need a fairly high adult to children ratio because of the water. But now, as I always do, I'm starting to worry. The party in on a B/h weekend, so if we assume that some will be away and poss some won't turn up/will be ill on the day, can it still work?

What is the usual drop-out rate? For DS1 I've always been disgusted at the numbers that just don't turn up - although don't think that will happen with my friends' DC's.

Also the age range will be 3-10.

Put on your invitation that you need to know numbers by a certain date. Some people DO forget, but even if a couple do it sounds like you've got plenty of children there.
