For children aged 2 to 7. I am going to make nice glittery and scented home made play dough and stick in a pretty cellophane bag. Piece of cake obviously.

A friend had fab eco friendly bath colour tablets, but I have tracked them down and they are 50p a pop

I have about 20 guests

any ideas please? how little can you get away with putting in the bag?

Someone here has already suggested it, but it was such a hit at our 3 year old's party that I'm going to give it another vote!

We did away with party bags altogether and gave each child a packet of flower seeds. I found some for £1 each (suttons online do a 'fun to grow' range for kids), so not cheap, cheap, but you can easily spend that on plastic tat. And the kids (and parents) were delighted.

I hate the bags of coloured sweeties that you usually get, DS is not allowed them so we put mini boxes of raisins and packs of cadbury chocolate animal biscuits.

We always get bulk packs of small toys off the internet..This year it was slidey puzzles, and bendy dinosaurs.

Total cost per bag was about £1

FrannyandZooey · 11/03/2008 20:26

I think most 5 year olds will be pleased with a packet of seeds pidge, but will be hoping for something else as well I am afraid to say

the stakes are high round here - you get LOADS in a party bag

%*&!%£"!

Instead of using party bags, get coloured beakers (about 4 for a quid in Asda), fill with some freddo frogs, cake, carton of juice (um bongo now iws 100% jiuce I see, in a nice bright carton!). Then they get to keep the beaker forever. Well, i'd like it anyway!

dizzydixies · 11/03/2008 20:30

fark all wrong with some pretty hair bands for girls and much less tatty than an inflatable microphone

go on ebay and buy tonnes of things in bulk, saves you a fortune

We are having a pirate party for DS1 in April, they are going to gather things for their party bags throughout the party.
We are having a pirate loot box lucky dip thing and reasonable prizes for taking part in games, I have bought books from the book people (Total bargins!!)
They are all getting a pirate hat and eye patch to wear on arrival at the party which they can take home, and a helium pirate balloon.
Then the standard piece of pirate galleon.

FrannyandZooey · 11/03/2008 20:32

I would rather not do food - they will just have eaten when they get the bag
that is an idea I have never heard of before - putting things in the beaker - very ingenious

Last year I did the plastic beaker option.

For the girls I got pink plastic beakers (from Party Pieces). I then scrunched up pink crepe paper to take up about 3/4 of the cup space. On to I added a small cupcake, and then added a couple of bits of plastic jewellry, a mini chocolate bar, etc and the wrapped in cellohpane, tied at the top with curling ribbon.

Did similar for boys with differnet beaker and contents.

They did look very impressive I have to say.

dizzydixies · 11/03/2008 20:33

I used red coloured picnic boxes and personalised them so knew who they were for, that way I didn't have to make them all the same and made sure they were age relevant

just weren't allowed to open them before they left lol

tassisssss · 11/03/2008 20:33

This year i'm thinking of giving all the children a ball (football sized but probably with a character on it) and just putting cake and a choc in the bags.

Do you think that'll work?

I'll have to run it past massively opinionated almost 5 year old ds first!

(incidentally his favourite party bag things are glo sticks and a "stretchy man")

Pidge · 11/03/2008 20:34

F&Z - too true, the 3 year olds are much easier to fob off! If I hadn't been feeling sick due to being pregnant I was going to make them each a nicely decorated cupcake to take home as well. But frankly making the main party cake and wrapping the blasted pass the parcel was enough of an effort.

There's real party bag pressure as they get bigger isn't there. I must mull this over in lots of time before our 6 year olds bash in the summer!

FrannyandZooey · 11/03/2008 20:34

I bet that looked very exciting

have just had another idea - something like a cake or biscuit mix in a bag, so they can add ?? water?? egg?? or something at a later stage and bake biscuits?

Hulababy · 11/03/2008 20:34

cups here

FrannyandZooey · 11/03/2008 20:35

blimey a large football would go down very well with ds

dizzy I may have to do the same, am just trying to be lazy and get one size fits all things

OP posts:
dizzydixies · 11/03/2008 20:36

boxes here lol

dizzydixies · 11/03/2008 20:38

franny, I had to do it as I had from baby girl right up to 7yr old boys and it meant I didn't have to think of something they all liked!

do you have a local tesco, they have tonnes of stuff reduced or on £1 specials - have started picking up bits and pieces already as spreads the cost

there are also loads of £1 books due to it being book week last week

FrannyandZooey · 11/03/2008 20:38

look something like this cookie mix here

would you like that or would you just think "oh great now I have to cook with them "

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 11/03/2008 20:39

that mix wouldn't work as you have to add an egg and it makes loads
I need a different one, but you get the idea?
