Any sugar craft/cake decorators out there - help needed finding supplies

Ds is being baptised at the start of March and have decided to make and decorate his cake myself. Have looked through some books and have an idea of what I want it all to look like but no idea where to source kit and indeed what basic kit might be best to buy.

Would like to produce a baby sleeping under a blanket with teddy type design with name on top and bible passage round outside. Am guessing I'll need alphabet cutters, smoother, some sort of craft knife..... Is it best to make modelling paste from scratch or can you buy it ready made/coloured (think this would be a good option in terms of time/mistakes).

Would very much appreciate any advice on eauipment, good reliable suppliers etc. Thanks

How about Jane's Asher's Sugarcraft - I've bought stuff from her site before and it's lovely!

Well done to you for doing it because it will be much nicer and more personal than a bought one. Hope we get to see a picture!

I made something similar for a Christening but didn't use any cutters - it's amazing what you can do with a little patience and time. I didn't do a bible passage but modelled a bible itself next to a teddy and blanket - it looked quite good - will try and put a photo up later if you'd like.

Cutters etc are ridiculously expensive so unless you are going to start doing it for others I would urge you to try on your own.

I make modelling paste and use a craft knife and stencils from greasproof paper.

Wisteria would be nice to see a picture - sounds lovely! How do you make your modelling paste? A lot of the stuff I've read it seems to be a case of mixing a couple of diff types of icing together, looks complicated. Think I would probably use cutters again esp if they were letters although you're right about just having a bash myself, just quite nervous and aware that time is of the essence.

I use this site

almondart.com/acatalog/

They've always been very efficient and reasonable.

If you need a lot of letters then you will deffo need cutters but a set of the alphabet aren't too expensive and will come in handy time and time again I would imagine, trying to find my photos in the total chaos that is my office and filing system

I can't find them anywhere but will have a look later and try again... I know I got them out to post them on here for someone else though so they're around somewhere....

Wow Wisteria, those are really impressive, Christening cake is lovely and castle fab! Found all the kit and colours I think I'm going to need and my various parcels have been arriving the last couple of days - hoping the rest will arrive tomorrow. Going to get on and make the cake part over the weekend so it can sit and mature a couple of weeks. Will def get a pic of the finished article on here - hoping first attmept will be ok as no dog to hide the evidence of any bodge jobs in !
