First Communion Dress

Non-Catholic here with an 8yr old dd about to make her first Holy Communion. Any bright ideas for a dress? She likes 'meringues' but they really don't suit her. It's June - so I'm thinking white/floaty/cool, rather than bridesmaid, chiffon type. Could be tempted to make one?

Dd1 had this dress from there, which is beautiful, very plain as Communion dresses go but lovely simple linen and cool for a hot summer day.

Do be guided by what your dd wants, though -- I was desperate for a meringue at age 7, and resented my mother for years for putting me in something plain. Dd1 on the other hand hated dresses, so the one I linked to above was a good compromise. She looked lovely, and was happy.

As practising catholics my 3 dds have all had the full meringue outfit with veils gloves ect. But beware of the weather dd2s communion day was cold,windy and pouring with rain,the poor children were all frozen just from walking into the church, its well worth buying a cardi or bolero ,you can get some really beautiful ones.

There are some nice options in the BHS "young bridesmaids" collection.

(many of which are fairly white/floaty/cool, rather than full-on bridesmaid IYSWIM). Monsoon may have something suitable, too. Don't neglect white dresses trimmed with coloured ribbon, which can always be changed for white (we did that for my sister's first communion).
