Hi, just been looking at my 2008 calenadar, and am sad to discover that i am going to be at work on dd2's 4th birthday. This is very bad luck as i only work 2 days a week.

i could ask my job share partner to swap days (i teach in a primary school) but am worried she'll think i'm being a bit precious (she is the deputy head, and a bit 'no nonsense').

i realise that the whole world doesnt stop on our LOs birthday, but dd is starting school next year so i won't spend her birthday with her for quite some time. also, it'd mean she couldnt possibly have her party on the actual day.

what would/ do you do?

I am a CM and mostly always am working on my dc's birthdays The parents would have a fit if i asked for time off for birthdays.

We usually just do the birthday on the nearest Sat/Sun.

thanks, gal, but surely your job also means that you could spend the day with them when they are pre schoolers themselves. also, you could have a tea party and include your mindees. tricky, isnt it?

I didn't work ds1's 3rd (on holiday) or 4th (on mat leave). I did work his 1st and 2nd though. It's just life isn't it. Presumably you don't work 24 hour shifts so will spend some of the day with your dd. And you can do something the weekend before or after.

anyone else?

chasing, i know that its just life, but as i work only 2 days a week, it is rather bad luck.

Well i could but like you i want to spend the day with my dc on their own and make it special, ykwim? I would still be working and prob not have time to make it special for my dc.

Also don't think my friends and family would fancy coming to the dc's birthday with a bunch of mindees lol

i see what you mean, gal.

i guess i could do the party the day before. it cant be the weekend either side, as we have 3 other family birthdays within 10 days, 2 falling at the weekends. grrr.

Could you even get a half day off?
I had to work on my son's birthday last year but managed to get the afternoon off. He was in nursery in the morning anyway so worked out fine.

i think if you want one last bang of a birthday onsidering hes going to school soon and it the last time - if you can get the day of - do so.

you dont have to tell them what its for - just say i need xxx date off please can we swap this? i hope to be able to return the favour

I only work 2 days a week, Tuesdays and Fridays (8.30 - 5.30 so long days) and this year dd1 and dd3 have their birthdays in the same week, one on the Tues and one on the Fri!

I don't particularly want a whole week of holiday so have settled for finishing early on both days so they can have a party tea at home and their proper parties are going to be the weekends either side.

noonar · 05/01/2008 19:33

thanks, custy. i think you're right. i should maybe not tell them the reason, but as her birthday is v close to mine,so i think someone on the staff may remember it is her birthday. i may just try to get off early.

cant really do the weekends, as i said before, as it would be on either my birthday, my gran's birthday , or my FILs birthday. aaagh. and this year i'm gonna have a party for ME ...wayheyyy...for the first time since i was 11. a very grown up birthday party, in my new house, which we move into in march.
