she likes to read fiction, travels a bit, likes beautiful things but is not into ornaments or trinkets particularly. She likes gardening a bit, but is not super keen. She loves good food and cooks really well, but doesn't really love cooking...see why this is hard? Any ideas please!???

Hi Astrophe,

Don?t know what your budget is like, but this is what I got my dad for his 60th a couple of years ago Northern Belle ? was around £600 for him and my step mum ? fantastic experience though.

Beautiful, top-quality face/neck cream, or hand cream (good for gardeners) - my mum likes that sort of thing.

Or books - she sounds as if she might like Barbara Kingsolver, if she hasn't read them already.

For my Mums 60th we had a family portrait done with my Mum and her 13 grandchildren in it. It was a fun day and it's a lasting memory to keep. She was very pleased with it.

Have a look in Pastimes, they have beautiful things, jewellery, frames etc I always like to get Crabtree and Evelyn goodies, they're rather nice. How about a nice bag, purse, gloves.....

Photo or portrait is a nice idea, does she like paintings? A commission of her house or the like??? A painiting of a favourite place perhaps???

Astrophe · 07/11/2007 10:25

oh, sorry to be difficult but:

She lives in Australia (so no orient express, although wow!)

My Dad very sweetly buys her spa treatments and that sort of thing regularly (luck Mum - hint hint DH!)

...am doing some googling on hand luggage and clothes though

Like the idea of handluggage, depending on your budget.
We bought my mum a glider experience - local, so she could glide over places she knew - went down very welll
Fabulous pashmina?
Hamper from Fortum & Mason (they do some nice ones, as you'd expect)?

Astrophe · 07/11/2007 10:27

Oh, and her only two grandchildren are my DC, and we have already had a portrait done of them as a Chrissy pressie...very inconsiderate of her to have her b'day so close to Christmas!

Like the painting idea - will have a look...
