...on behalf of your small child (under 5), do you write pretending to be them?

No! I do a card they can "sign" (dd is four at present) and try and get an appropriate quote from them re the loveliness of the gift.

Oh yes and then I get them to 'write' their name (or do a little squiggle or a few kisses depending on age) at the bottom!

I did it for the first few, but I felt a bit of a dick channelling my child

For a few people (who'll get it) I write down verbatim what she says (eg I like my new dolly, I've taken all her clothes off. I like my cake. I've got a crumb in my pants...)

I write them, and sign them, feels right to me.
