Very early days but thinking of my 30th and I'm vaguely thinking along the lines of trying to do a sort of 1980s retro thing... but need some help with ideas!

Due to numbers I will be hiring a hall and doing a buffet. Haven't yet decided on whether to have day with family & kids or just evening with friends.

So far I'm thinking:

  • space hoppers out for the kids, and adults (!), there is an outdoor bit
  • maybe a video projector with silent clips from the A Team, and all 1980s kids TV
  • somehow getting hold of pacman and space invaders to play on a big screen
  • having things like Rubiks cube and Spangles to decorate the buffet table
  • 80s music

So I need more ideas. How can I decorate etc?

I want it to be a bit different and not just people mingling and drinking... I want people to really have a good time but not think WTF! Would you think this was cool or a bit weird?

Kind of want to avoid fancy dress and the theme to only become apparent when people arrive, or do you think it would work better as fancy dress?

Any ideas and opinions gratefully received!

Just an excuse for the adults to scoff, really.

oh my god this is scary as I have been a grown up right throught the 80s! Big hair and shoulder pads would be my suggestion, otherewise new romantic style.
Rubiks cube and spangles were probably more 70s TBH, but hey, probably gives the right idea (in which case, include black jacks & fruit salad chews; parma violets if you can get them).

You could also go with the year you were born as the theme for your party, which would make it 70s rather than 80s (if my maths serves me right)and will give you more scope because you'll then have punk, heavy metal, Bay City rollers etc etc so might make the whole thing easier?

Definitely do fancy dress. Big hair, leg warmers, ra ra skirts. Fab!

You can still get those crisps, in multi packs.

have a cake in the shape of one of those mahoosive mobile phones that poncey estate agents used to carry around in briefcases?

You can get retro games consoles which plug straight into the telly. I presume you can put them through a big screen if you want.
