My close friend has had a really tough time this year. She’s been single since the breakdown of a relationship and has had serious health issues to deal with. Her family are pretty rubbish too and she has little contact with them. It’s her 40th soon and I want to get her a special gift. Budget of about £60. Any ideas?

Is an 'experience' voucher a suitable gift? For a recently widowed friend's 50th, I got a voucher for the two of us to do an adrenaline raising rib ride on a local river but if her health issues make physical things tricky, maybe a lovely afternoon tea or a visit to a local beauty spot. Take a photograph and frame it for her to remember the special day you shared.
If she isn't able to do/doesn't enjoy getting out and about, how about getting a local artist to paint some place that is important to her.

A magazine subscription would remind her of your thoughtfulness each month it arrives.

The best 40th present I got from a friend was a personalised door mat! Think it came from notonthehighstreet.com

Spa treatments or make your own pamper hamper with scented candle, face mask, body balm, bath bombs, nail varnish, cocktails etc...
