we did little paper bags full of old fashioned penny sweets for ours. they went down really well, lots of exclaimations of 'haven't had one of these in years'

we put 5 sugared almonds in a little circle of gauze tied with a ribbon - they represent Health, Happiness, Wealth, Love and Longevity. (?I may be misremembering the 5)
sat around one weekend making them with my parents and brother whcih turned out to be fun!

We went to a wedding were we each got a lottery ticket. Othjer than that I can't remember what they have been like at any other wedding. I suggest that your sister saves her cash and spends it on something that will actually add to the wedding!

we had a chinese wedding and so each family that attended got 3 growing bamboo in a plastic container to take home - representing luck.

unfortunately i was still doing labels, ribbon, etc at midnight the day before the wedding....

We had the traditional almonds , and for the children we put childrens sweets in instead of almonds.

I think the personilized gift things are nice for the top table as they are your family but for the other guests I would just stick to the chocolate idea

Thorntons do some nice chocolate ideas.

If you have children going to the wedding my cousin did like an activity pack for them she got some cheap bright coloured folders and put in them colouring book , crayons and some sweets etc which was a brilliant idea as it kept my two quiet during the meal as it is such along time to sit there and can be quiet boring for them when the speeches are going on

We got married at Gretna 2 weeks ago.Did the Border Tablet(that Saltire linked to)in small pails with ribbon which matched the kilts.Men got minatures of their favourite drink with tartan ribbon.

Don't know what everyone really thought but everyone said thankyou and they all took them home too.

Second the bags for kids.I did that and the kids loved them and it kept them amused for ages.

My SIL had cream and chocolate as a colour theme for their reception and she got little boxes and put some chocolate and cream bath pearls in.
They also gave the flowers on the tables away to certain members of the family as they were in lovely glass vases and they also printed off some photos of their wedding and framed them (they got married in Canada).

I don't like almonds (sugared or otherwise) so I did Jelly Babies (5) wrapped in cellophane and tied with orange ribbon (orange was the colour of bridesmaid dresses, DH's tie etc etc)
All little packets opened immediately and scoffed - which was the intention

My best friend and I did them all a couple of nights before the wedding whilst drinking a bottle or two of wine, so no real cost.

We had a candle wrapped in ribbon for the ladies & a miniature whiskey bottle for the guys. Kids got some choccy in a little box.
They are supposed to light the candle on the anniversary to remember the day..bit naff now I've written it here but they looked nice.

Seeing as this is online, I can admit that I find them a bit pointless. Most people don't keep them, and it just adds to the masses of stuff unnecessarily going to landfill. Just pointless and unnecessary.

If you can't bear to leave nothing, make it something people can eat on the day rather than a keepsake which really only very close family will keep.

We had little pads made. They look like matchbooks but are pads and we had our names and wedding date on the front.

PinkMartini · 31/05/2007 13:39

I love these
Not favours as such but at least they're useful for lighting candles etc.
