HELP!!- Lightning McQueen cake

I have bought the novelty tin but am really nervous about the thought of icing the cake. I hate the look of piped icing (-other than plain outlines), but don't really like the taste of marzipan/ fondant. Can I ice a cake like this, with lots of different sections/ colours, with smooth, creamy icing?

Tips appreciated!

this might help - looks good. My DS is mad on Cars, might try to be brave enough to attempt it myself!

Thanks - that is the cake tin that I have, but those instructions are for piping the whole cake.

I'm thinking that I'll either pipe it and then smooth it over, or cover the whole cake in red smooth buttercream and pipe on/ add sweets and sections of ready-to-roll icing for the other colours.

Does anyone know if that will work?
