and what gave it the "wow factor?

e.g I went to an amazing party where suddenly after dinner a sheet when a partition in the marquee dropped to reveal the dance floor
Photo booths are cool but I'd love to hear about fun props etc
Also drink ideas.
I went to an awesome christening where an ice cream van brought 99s for all the kids and a mate is organising a 50th where she's got a reduced rate on some cottages in Norfolk and has hired the village hall and is going to ask the fish & chip van to come and treat everyone to F&C

Things that are not that difficult but make people REMEMBER what a great time it was -

I think my wedding do was great ! It was the DJ that made it,he played all the dance floor fillers and everyone danced their socks off.

I went to a party over Christmas that was dire, the DJ kept cutting songs off halfway to talk over them, then he'd play something that'd get everyone on the dance floor but follow it up with a dreary slow song and people were getting sick of getting up and down by the minutes. He was generally awful.

The host ended up telling him straight to play some decent music and shut the fuck up because nobody was there to listen to him wittering on.

I don't think our Dj played one duff song! It was a real mish mash too - Tiger Feet followed by In THe Mood by Glen Miller but the whole
Place was rocking !

Oh yes, I fully intend to ensure the playlist is SPOT on but I'm thinking about other small details.

Photo booths etc. are all good fun, but I remember the party that a famous chef was flown in to cater for, where we drank 1980 Chateau Lafite and there was a slight-of-hand magician. I imagine the first two are pretty budget prohibitive.

Or the midnight dinner party where all the food was black and / or white and served by candle light (not a single light was on in their residence, we walked up the path to their house with candles either side of the pathway to guide us).

The cheese platters at our wedding as the late night snack with proper lovely bread and crackers. The cheese was given as a gift from a couple of family friends. To buy it isn't that expensive.

Generally, it's inviting the right people, IME.

I'm not interested in the 'gimmicks' or 'themes' . It's the company that 'makes' a party.

A good DJ really helps though.
