Fairy wands for girls but what for boys?

My DD's 6th birthday is coming up and I saw some adorable diy fairy wands on Pinterest and want to make a big basket of them for the girls to pick up on arrival and run around the garden with (pic attached). But it is a mixed party so what should be on offer for boys? Don't want to do swords as they might all kill each other! I can easily make enough of each type of thing for all guests (for boys who do like fairy wands or girls who like the "boy" option). Any ideas gratefully received!

Anything stick-like will be turned into swords by the boys - even fairy wands. Just a warning Grin

Those don't look particularly girly so why not make them for the boys and girls? Better than trying to gender the toys imo.

TheSuspiciousMsWhicher · 12/05/2016 11:02

My nephew would love one of those! They don't particularly look like fairy wands IMO just a stick with lovely streamers. I think they're pretty gender neutral TBH. Why not make some up in 'boy' colours I'd you're worried? But I think most little boys would love one of those.

How about a bucket of wands and a bucket of swords. Let the children choose what they want. No need to make it boys and girls toys.

I agree with lucky. My DS would quite happily play with that. Call them magic wands for the boys that don't want to play with "fairy" stuff.

Wizard or magician stick

JonSnowsBeardClippings · 12/05/2016 11:07

Call them magic wands and make enough for all of them. My ds has a Harry Potter wand and likes yelling avada kadavra at me Hmm
De-gender the wands and let the boys join the fun!

Great idea to just call them magic wands! Will make an assortment of colours and everyone can choose what they like. thank you!

YY to degender and offer to all as they are lovely.... except: 5 and 6YO running about the garden waving pointy sticks? My (lovely but clumsy) youngest would have had someone's eye out at that age!

This. Not only is it easier for you but also not all girls want to be fairies and boys wizards/whatever else is macho.

Don't do pink and blue bags either. My ds always wants the pink one and is never allowed cos it's a girls bag. Cue crying. It's so old fashioned, why do we perpetuate this??

rak5a · 12/05/2016 11:24

Totally agree Bringiton2016. My DD's fave colour is green so all party bags are green!

What Jon said. My son would have been highly put out if he didn't get a fairy wand, even if he was as likely to karate chop people on the windpipe with it as to cast spells. But the degendering is the right solution, and pink/blue party bags are very depressing...

Swords made from modeling balloons are quite hard to damage people with (except the noise when they pop!!!).
Mine would have loved a multi coloured wand like those - but it would also be quite likely to be turned into a sword for at least some of the time.

I love those wands, they look fantastic! They could be 'wizard wands'. They are not girly at all. Why not get them all pointy hats too, fairly cheap party hats in metallic cardboard.
