What's the best christening present you've ever heard of / been given?

Hiya, becoming a godmother soon and want to buy my new godson the best christening present ever.

Can you give me any advice / pointers on what you would have liked or the best gift you received?

Was thinking just money and a card but don't know if that's a bit boring.

Lay down some wine for when he turns 18? I've set up a trust fund for my godaughter.

Traditionally godparents gave silver. Instead of the traditional spoons etc may something he can use in later life like cuff links.

Love the idea of small trust fund.

I have given stieff teddy bears with a growler in the past to nieces.

A trust fund is a great idea.
You could always create a scrapbook for him to read when he's 18.
Document a few photos and memories and then write what you think he'll be like.. What he'll be studying, what he wants to be.
He can go through and see if any of your premonitions were right.

Plant a tree. There are several initiatives and you get a number and a certificate.

These are all great. I'd also suggest giving something that can be handed on. My dad received a silver christening mug engraved with his initials from his godfather (75 years ago!) and when we had DS baptised my dad gave DS the mug, with DS's initials also engraved on it.

DS is the only boy in his generation of our family to be baptised. We are a pretty godless family, DS was baptised as his dad was keen, and even though my dad and now-teenager-DS are both staunch agnostics, the christening mug is still a lovely link between them and one that I hope will be passed on down the line.

A good hardback edition of a classic children's book - we got some lovely ones that our children can keep and then read to their children in turn.
We got a lovely rose bush too, a variety called Double Delight - we have twins . I plan to take cuttings so they can each take a rose with them when they get their own homes - assuming the bushes last that long!
