4 and 40 - is a joint party a daft idea?

DS is 4 this year 3 days before I'm 40. I'd like to have a party for my dreaded day, and am keen that it be a family friendly affair anyway. DS hasn't got much in the way of wee friends yet, although he will start pre-school in September.

Any ideas for a joint party, or is it just a daft idea?

I think it's a great idea.

Would there be many kids at it? Would be a great opportunity to get the family around

Not much family and most are abroad! But lots of friends with small kids, yes...

I did dd's birthday party on my birthday - as only 2 days apart, she is 6 and definately not sharing the glory. It can be hard work organising a party, so I would suggest delegating loads so you don't end up doing it all.

I made it quite clear to everyone that as I was organising, catering, running her party (control freak) that my official birthday was the next day when lie in, pampering and peace were expected.

I went to a forty and two party and it was great!

New replies thanks folks! I have been hatching a plan... So far it's looking like this:
Family treasure hunt in local country park (to be organised by DH and friend). Everyone out together for a walk and some fun.
Buffet lunch with glass of fizz for grownups and fizzy orange for kids.
Storyteller (a pirate chap) to come and entertain everyone for a while - he promises tales that will enthrall young and old.
Bit of music and a game of pass the parcel for kids.

I think I'll go out for meal/cocktails with close friends too...

That sounds lovely. I was at a country park yesterday & there was a joint 40th/1st birthday picnic being held. It looked great fun, they set up a rounders match before lunch & then spent the rest of the afternoon eating & having fun.

Sounds absolutely fabulous! Have a great day. Kids at that age don't yet need much entertaining and will be happy to run around and play much of the time, giving you time to relax and socialise with the grown-ups.
