Decopatch party?

Dd1 is going to be 9 in January. She had wanted a Harry Potter party, but has now changed her mind. There will be 10 girls including dd1. Dh will not be here as he is working weekends.

I came across decopatch. Now, I am not great at art and craft, but this doesn't look too bad. I had wondered about getting a small animal each to decopatch. Is this too ambitious? In past years we have stuffed bears, decorated wooden boxes and made necklaces. This just involves glue doesn't it - not paint (panic).

So yay or nay? If not, another crafty activity.

I think it sounds quite good but have no experience of children that age. But came to say you can get sets of decopatch cheaper on eBay if you didn't know

It just uses glue but can be a bit fiddly (tip: rip the paper don't cut it).

Depending on the girls the only thing I would wonder about is whether you'll have enough pairs of hands to help them? Some are bound to find it trickier than others and what about drying them before they take them home (or would you leave them wet). You need to cover the whole thing in glue to finish off.

Not trying to sound negative! It's a lovely activity and they will enjoy it!

Thanks - i'll have a look on eBay. I had found one company which supplied a party box for 10 children which was £50. It had everything you needed for a decopatch party.

Please add any negatives! I don't want to be over ambitious. I could probably get my mum round to help.

Perhaps I should get hold of a little kit first and give it a go myself.

Haven't done it myself but my friend's DD who is 7yo enjoys it.
Might steal your idea for DD's birthday actually. Last year she did pottery painting, which went very well.

I panic at the sound of the word paint or glitter. What did you get for pottery painting? Did you do that at home?

We went to a local pottery place (I'm in Surrey if you want details).

Baker Ross sell the plain pieces though, and porcelain pens (like marker pens) if you wanted to do it at home.

Belatedly joining thread as dd2 going to do this for her party - not til end feb. Going to be sarcophagus, have got some cheap cardboard pencil cases half price in hobby craft. I'm fairly crafty, but not done this before. I was thinking to maybe avoid too much soggy glueiness I and dd1+2 could do a layer of gold for the initial layer before and let it dry. On the day there would be some extra colours, plus there are a few decoupage Egyptian sheets for added detail and I have some metalic pens. I thought that way even if some get bored at least they will get a gold pencil case! (not the only activity in the party).

If you've read this far- a couple of questions - do I need special glue for £££ or will normal pva/ extra strong pva do? Do I need the special paper, or would gold coloured tissue paper do for the first layer? Or I have a thicker gold paper too.

3birthdaybunnies - sounds good! I have not done any decopatching before, so I am following the rules. It suggests decopatch glue - paperpatch - and the special paper. I am getting 11(got to include dd2!) piggy banks from crafty crocodiles to decopatch. Have bought some reduced priced chocolate coins to put in them when finished. I think it will cost about £50 for all of it - pretty good considering the party craft place in my local town charges £20 per child.

I am also going to buy disposable aprons and tablecloth.

Ooh where did you get the coins? A fiver a head is good value. My dd2 is quite very specific about how the party will run, and how the finished articles will look. I doubt there's a pack out there to make egyptian sarcophagus! Have discovered that I can water down normal PVA 3glue:1 part water, and tissue paper should work. As I'm doing that stage before the party I think I will attempt it on ds's one first, and if it looks ok will do a gold base layer on all of them, will free up some more money for specialist egyptian paper, muslin mummies, jewels, pyramid boxes, scarab beetles, pyramid mould to make pyramid potato croquettes...... Think she is the next Pippa Middleton!

I got the coins from Ocado - reduced to 20p a bag! Your sounds fab. I think I get more excited about party preparations than dd1!

DD is doing this for her 8th birthday in Feb. Decopatch is very easy and the glue dries fast. We were shown how to do it at a John Lewis Xmas shopping night and the frame was dry before we left the shop ie in about 15 min. DD made a little horse for her big sister for Xmas, no help needed. We bought loads of paper mache boxes and little frames half off at Hobbycraft yesterday, 50p each. The paper is easy to tear. Have fun!

Thanks Bunble that's reassuring, I had visions of trying to dry it with a hair dryer before they left. I have decided with mine to put a gold layer on first, so at least they go home with something which looks slightly more like a sarcophagus than a cardboard box, going to get them to add the 'details'. Plus dd2 has so much else she wants to cram into the party. They are only 5/6 so I reckon keep it fairly fast pace. Dd1 is making bears and watching a dvd, much more sedate!
