Birthday cake advice

It's my ds's birthday later this week - he's 6. I really want to make him a cake but have no idea how to decorate it - any ideas for something fairly simple that a baking klutz like myself can manage?

erm....he's not having a themed birthday this year. he's a complete chocoholic though so wanted some kind of chocolate-fest.

he has 6 year old boy interests - star wars, knights, lego, skateboards, spooky stuff...you know the kind of thing.

I'm making a chocolate hedgehog cake for DS who is 2 tomorrow, but I don't suppose that's cool enough for a 6 year old! You could really cheat and do a rectangular cake, covered in, say, red icing, stick 4 licorice wheels on the sides and then stand an action man on top!!

Err, I'll stick with the hedgehog I think Grin

how about a chocolate cake with chocolate butter icing, sprinkled with green dessicated coconut (put some coconut in a plastic bag, add a few drops of food colouring and shake)and topped with something like a figure of a knight on horseback (ie Playmobil or Lego )or footballer cake decoration or other play figure.

ha ha mamag - no I think we've got past the hedgehog stage....

Could maybe construct a landscape and put some lego figures in it, as Liz suggests...am not v good at icing either, sadly.
