What can I use instead of olives?

And is there an easier way to do the spots than having to use tinted cheese mix?

black grapes?

Am struggling to think of anything else for the spots as you need to be able to make them stick

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 06/07/2012 18:46

They're cute aren't they. I'd use black grapes for the heads if they don't like olives, but lots of kids do given the opportunity to try them. I don't know about the spots... will have a think, but if it's for a party then doing the spots the way they say isn't a big deal is it? (bit of a faff for a couple of kids at lunchtime granted!!).

Raisins?

Why not just use olives?

I made these for a party last year ('Cheese bugs'):
www.chefkoch.de/rezepte/974988533819/Lustige-Kaese-Kaefer.html

On crackers or small rolls spread with Ketchup or Philly/Ketchup mix, use halved (lengthwise and widthwise so they're not so thick!) babybels as wings, and the dots were ketchup, and feelers of snipped chives from the garden. Along similar lines I also made 'toadstools' by 'glueing' (with a bit of cream cheese) halved cherry toms on top of mini-mozarella balls, and adding dots with mayo (dip a chopstick and use like a paintbrush). YUM! The original recipe used used eggs and larger tomatoes!

Good luck and have fun!

I remember my mother making the original ones with the eggs and tomatoes.

Anja, I keep seeing you on here! I do enjoy following your German links - ages since I lived in Germany.

When I made them I used black writing icing for the spots. You use so little that you can't taste it.

LaBelleDameSansPatience · 08/07/2012 20:16

Good idea!

My DS doesn't like olives and neither do I.
