...can I take the liberty of starting another thread, since the other one filled up?

So you're sorted for bunting, then Grin?

Actually some friends of my DB did a really lovely thing for their wedding - their close friends all got together and helped make miles of bunting for the reception - and wrote messages on some of the flags. The bunting now comes out for all celebrations and occasions, including their LO's christening. If you have an excess of handmade bunting, maybe you should get some fabric pens and get people to write messages to your DDs on the flags - then bring them out for birthdays for ever more (and their weddings, of course Wink)?

Thanks for cake ideas. I am up with a sicky child so can spend the next few hours looking up cakes.

Thedoctorswife - are you on Metronidazole? If so, it is no wonder your poor dd (and you) are feeling so ill! Nasty stuff (but necessary for anerobic infection)

Tinkerisdead · 07/03/2012 03:24

Yes thats what im on dedalus. Im up too feeding dd.
Maybe my cake idea works for you too. Im going to do white cake with earls around the edges and a pair of bootees on the top and dds name. You can buy moulds to make strings of pearls and cutters to make bootees.

DedalusDigglesPocketWatch · 07/03/2012 09:25

I think that cake sounds lovely, but very much for a baby iyswim? DS is a great hulking, snot faced toddler with feet so big, booties didn't even fit him at birth! :o

My very talented friend is making the cake and we were thinking maybe spots or stripes.

stealthsquiggle · 07/03/2012 09:35

Dedalus the last one (this one) is my favourite. I must ask the cake quiche how one would get edges that sharp on the blocks.

Can't see the pictures on my phone, will have to look on laptop later.

Blatherskite · 07/03/2012 19:45

My family are all coming down at the weekend so I'm going to make an extra cake. I'm wondering how hard a LEGO block might be.... Hmm

stealthsquiggle · 07/03/2012 20:21

You could make a Lego Block with a big costco cake and some mini cakes made in ones of these - they have straight sides and there is one sitting in my lakeland shopping basket along with a cake pop maker and the only thing stopping me buying them is that my purse is in the car

  • it makes little cakes with straight sides

I was thinking of something similar but smaller. As much as I love costco cakes, they're huge and I only need to feed 11 - possibly 8 if Dsis has her baby in the meantime or feels too huge to travel.

I was thinking of making a Hummingbird 3 layer chocolate cake, creating a block shape out of a round cake and using a round cookie cutter to cut the top bits out of the leftover cake. I think I might have a square cake tin somewhere which might make the job a bit easier...

Either that or making the cake in a loaf tin and baking a spare layer in a round tin to cut the top bits out of.

If I use a cookie cutter for the top bits, I can use the same cutter to cut out the sugar paste to cover it in and make life a bit easier.

I'm running out of time before Sunday so I think I need to make it out of things I already have or can get from our local Hobbycraft as I don't think I've got time to get much delivered now.

My not very sensible tip for internet shopping is to memorise your card number. I can order all sorts of junk stuff without needing my wallet Blush

Blatherskite · 07/03/2012 20:36

And now I really, really want a cake pop maker!!

Must.

Not.

Order....

Tinkerisdead · 07/03/2012 21:18

What the bloody hell is a cake pop maker. I thought cake pops were cake, icing, mix together - roll into balls. Whats gonna help me roll cake balls? Although i am loving the mini cakes. Thats very 'pink garden party'

Dd has normal poo! My scar seems much drier and i went on the bus with the pram!! Yippeee!

Blatherskite · 07/03/2012 21:23

It looks a lot like a sandwich toaster but it makes round cake balls tat you can pop straight onto sticks - and for the bargain price of £20!

and from food to....

Hoorah for normal poo and drier scars! :)

I'm trying to decide on which chocolate cake recipe to use to make this Lego block. It's got to be firm enough to take making into a block but delicious enough to impress DBro's new girlfriend Grin

stealthsquiggle · 07/03/2012 22:08

Just typed a post and then lost it Angry

Hoorah for far brighter and more cheerful sounding DrsW, and all the things which contribute to that.

Blathers, since you know your card number, you clearly need to buy a cake pop maker (look, DrsW, here) and let me know if it works. The reason (well, one of them) I have never got around to cake pops is the whole business of crumbling up perfectly good cake and then squidging it back together with over-sweet buttercream

DrsW mini cakes would be so cool for the pink-vintage-garden party themed christening. I have no such logical use for than tin, but I want one [stamps foot]

If I take the rubbish out [bleugh] then I could collect my purse while I am out there. Or I could sew DS's rugby shorts back together, go to bed, and do the rubbish in the morning, thus saving myself lots of money until tomorrow.

Yes, but as confident I am of my card number, I am equally as confident that DH would go mad of I spent £20 on a cake pop maker. Am very tempted to put one on my birthday wish list though.

I think I'm going to go for Brooklyn Blackout cake for the Lego block. Mainly because I want to try the chocolate custard filling. Now to find my square cake tin...

Now to chose what to feed everyone. DS wants pizza but I fancy doing something a bit more poncey. Maybe I'll do both. Been leafing through Jamie's 30 minute meals for inspiration. Just waiting for DBro to get back to me with GF's food preferences.

stealthsquiggle · 07/03/2012 22:28

Bother. Just remembered that the chickens are not shut in.

I had better go and do the rubbish and shut the chickens in.

I may accidentally pick up my purse on the way back.

OP posts:
stealthsquiggle · 07/03/2012 23:29

I did it.

I couldn't help it.

Lakeland made me do it.

OP posts:
Blatherskite · 08/03/2012 09:42

I dug out my loaf tin this morning and it looks pretty much perfect for a Lego brick. Will have to take a little off the sides to straighten it up but less than I thought.

Wondering if I can make the Brooklyn Blackout cake as a loaf though. It's supposed to be done in sandwich tins and layered. I might have to change recipe. I could still split it afterwards and fill with something before icing.

Going to go to Hobbycraft this morning for some icing and a cake board.

stealthsquiggle · 08/03/2012 12:02

I have a dense chocolate cake recipe somewhere, but not with me. Which reminds me, I promised someone at school some recipes and completely forgot this morning Blush

OP posts:
Tinkerisdead · 08/03/2012 16:45

Lol at buying the cake pop maker. Now i do see the logic of it but i like the truffliness if cake/icing mix in a pop. I dont want a dry sponge ball. Let me know how it works out.

Dd pooing blood still. Spent two hours at the doctors and im back there again tomorrow and monday. Its horrible because i never ever ever go to the gp!

And i never ever take the rubbish. Dh says if we werent together i'd end up like mr trebus surrounded by rotting rubbish purely as i cannot stand taking the bin out.

stealthsquiggle · 08/03/2012 16:53

apparently it does choux buns well as well Grin. I am hoping it arrives before DH gets home so that I can hide it try it out.

Putting the rubbish out is the job I truly and absolutely loathe - but DH is away, so not much choice really Sad

Blathers are you sorted for cake recipes? I am home now having had a doing-both-things-badly day (cut short a meeting in an attempt to make it back to see some of DS's rugby match, failed, so loads of meeting follow-up and a distraught DS to deal with) so I can look for mine if you want?

Poor little DD2, DrsW - what on earth took 2 hours at the docs?

OP posts:
Blatherskite · 08/03/2012 18:26

It's OK Stealth. I'm going to try out a coffee-chocolate loaf recipe (minus the coffee) from one of my Hummingbird Bakery books. It looks very dense in the photo. I'm also going to do a Lemon and Poppyseed loaf for a second Lego block as we've got so many people to feed which might not be as dense but if all goes wrong, I should have the chocolate brick and I'll just ignore the fact that I tried it Wink

I went to hobbycraft today and bought a cake board to put the cakes on and the icing. That was before I decided on the second brick though so I'm going to go back tomorrow. I also bought myself a set of circle cutters but I think they're all too big so I'm going to pick up the smaller - and more expensive - set I saw too.

This is why I have no money left for cake pop machines :)

I've never actually tried making cake pops and the one I did try once was really dry so maybe DW is right Hmm

Will you be going to toddler group again tomorrow DW? DSis was asking who wanted to do the upcoming peer supporters course on FB last week too so let her know if you're interested.

Tinkerisdead · 08/03/2012 18:31

2 hours was - her not existing on the nhs system. I didnt take red book as naively assumed they'd have the info. They told me they wouldnt see her until they knew her nhs number and i said no way as she was pooing blood stained water.

I'd already booked her appointment on priviso that i registered her beforehand. I even booked a double slot saying its complicated history. They eventually called the hospital to confirm she was born. Then the doctor was running an hour late. I fed dd in the surgery and luckily she filled her nappy on cue so they took me seriously.

Tinkerisdead · 08/03/2012 18:40

Yes gonna hopefully go tomorrow. I have doctor again but not til afternoon.

Blatherskite · 08/03/2012 19:47

They wouldn't see a tiny and very poorly baby because of a number!! Shock That is awful.
