Dinosaur Party Games

My son is having a birthday party in January. We live in New Zealand - ie it's summer! He will be 3 but his guests will be slightly older. I would like suggestions for suitable dinosaur themed games.

buy a pack of cheap dinosaur toys and hide them in the garden. Tell them to go on a dinosaur safari and find them. they bring them back to a central point. While they are looking for more, hide them again. Keeps them going for ages! Then put the toys in the party bags at the end.

Pass the dino-poo (or egg if you prefer not to be gross). Like pass the parcel. Wrap a dino related toy up. Wrap it up in layers of brown paper. Say it's a dino-poo. They need to pass it to each other quickly. When the music stops, the person holding it unwraps a layer and they keep going. The person at the end left holding the poo is a the winner of the toy. (little boys and poo always = big giggles rightly or wrongly)

Pin the tail on the dino - print off a pic of a dinosaur and cut out a tail shape. Like pin the tail on the donkey, get them to stick it on while blind folded

Dino statues - play music, they all have to move around like dinosaurs. When the music stops, they have to freeze in that position. Any moving dino is out.

Carry the dino egg and spoon race

Hope that helps!

ooh - had another one: make a bucket full of jelly and put sweets in it. Kids have to put their hands in the swamp jelly to dig out a dino fossil

You can also buy those dino excavating kits where there are dino skeletons hidden in clay which the kids have to chip away at. Might be worth getting a couple of those for kids to have a play with

dinosaurs footsteps - as for grandmother's footsteps - sneaking up on a T-rex maybe?

Thank you both- what great ideas. I'll use them all. Don't suppose you can recommend a book which has a dinosaur cake in it???

Hi I had a dinosaur fossil hunt- made salt clay 'rocks' that contained dirt and coffee grounds to darken them (and they air dried, not the oven) and inside each rock I hid a little plastic dino. The kids had to play paleontologists and excavate the dough from the dinosaurs- toothbrushes worked well.
The craft activity upon arrival was making giant dinosaur feet which tied on and they ran a din-race in them later.
Use cookie cutters to make fairy bread look dinosaurish.
Another idea which I didn't use was "dirt cups" from chocolate pudding and crushed oreo cookies- hide a jelly dino lolly in them too.
If it is hot, a water fight with 'dino eggs' could be fun- prepare the water balloons well in advance, they are tiresome to fill!
For an easy cake, stick plastic dinos into green grass icing- easy!
