Need to impress some mumsnetters with my fantastic kids party!

Any ideas?

I am not very confident and this is the first time that I won't have had an entertainer at a biggish party.

I cannot possibly lose face and it be a miserable failure. What games can I play and how can I persuade someone else to do it for me?

how old are the children?

The party is for my dd who will be 4 and my ds who will be 1. Kids will range from 7 to 1.

I wasn't very clear, but 2 mumsnetters are coming and I don't want them complaining on here about my useless entertaining skills.

Pass the parcel, pin the tail on the donkey (or nose on the clown which I bought in Wilkinson's for 99p), musical bump, statues and chairs (if you've got enough space and chairs), stick a CD on and let them dance, get the toys out and let them get on with it.

Kids love this sort of thing-being bossed about. We did just that for dd's 4th and it went down a storm,much better than the usual dull titting about on the bouncy castle in the leisure centre scenario,complete with gum snapping dullards in attendance and mothers who can't get off their big arses to interact with their kids........grr!!!!

You could have a Pirates & Princess's party. Build a mini obstacle course in one room where the Pirates have to climb over or under things to save the Princess's, with prizes.
That's if you're not having too many kids!!

There will be about 20 kids and the same number of adults. I've had to hire a room as I suddenly realised that not everyone would fit in my house.

I'm convinced I haven't ordered enough food now, will have to do an emergency trip to Tescos on Saturday.

Kids lap up someone bossy with a very loud voice telling them what they will do.....my dh is fantastic at this sort of stuff!

Get big box of cornflakes, & do crispy cakes. Mini sausages, tesco pizzas, make your own toppings. Pasta dishes for the adults, cherry toms, cucumber, carrot & celery sticks with dip.
Don't worry, you'll make yourself ill.
People won't expect a 3 course dinner!!

I have just done dd birthday which was on a princess theme. We decorated crowns, made jewellery and had a hunt the princess treasure hunt. (Kids just hunted for laminated pictures of disney princesses and were rewarded in gold coins) We had a play dough table, a free drawing table ( v cheap buy a roll of discounted wallpaper and they draw on the back) we put up dd bouncy castle, a fuzzy felt table and a few puzzles. I did have lots of games planned but we only managed 2 games of pass the parcel as they had so much to do.

Moondog I always thought that kids didn't eat a lot of party food but they cleared me out, ate the lot - and there was a lot!

If you want to impress MNetters, surely you just need to provide alcohol for the grown-ups?

I had loads of food left over but i fed it to the leisure centre staff who eat it happily while trying to hoover up mashed in sausages from carpet.

I'm having ds's 5th birthday party tomorrow, like you have a hall, 20+ kids. Getting my DJ brother to bring a ghetto blaster and rubbish music, will have a crafts table with cards, baubles, pritt, sequins, pencils, crayons, cutout shapes, paper, fancy scissors, cookies, icing and various decorations. And a big tea. Made two birthday cakes to ice today. One will be iced like Thomas the Tank Engine, to blow out candles and bring home. The other will be similar but iced plainly and cut up already to give kids when leaving. No party bags but two big boxes full of shredded paper with small inexpensive gift wrapped for each child for girls and boys lucky dip. Will deffo have wine in the kitchen for adults, principally me
