Christening etiquette?

We have been invited to our first ever christening (we are a family of heathens!). I have no idea of the etiquette for these events - is it normal to buy a present? I know it sounds realy tight but we splashed out on an expensive present when the baby was born (6 months ago), and I've no idea what to buy - I suppose it should be something a bit meaningful but I don't really want to buy something else expensive. I've seen some ideas (books etc) in a post below, but do people always buy presents?

Yes, you must buy a gift and a card.
