Worried about my son who can’t find anywhere to live.

DS finished university and has spent 18 months applying for jobs (450+). A few interviews who say they recruited internally or need someone with more experience (that old chestnut). Most just never reply. We live in London.

He finally gets a job but it’s in Oxfordshire. The company will let him stay at their accommodation (usually for customers) for a maximum of two weeks.

He cannot find any accommodation after this time. He has tried spare room app but when he gets a response people are asking for females only or more often there is no reply. He messages them a couple more times but nothing.

He doesn’t drive but willing to walk/cycle. He does have T1 diabetes so that is a consideration with distance.

He then put an ‘I’m looking for’ ad another site and a woman contacted him to say that, following throat surgery, she would be renting out her 2 bed house and moving in with family. It looked amazing and the woman said that the bills & council tax. A 25 minute walk to work. Paid the holding fee and arranged viewing for Sunday (he starts work on Monday).

DS was excited about job & house finally the months of angst were coming to an end.

So this morning he received an email from the lady saying that the rental company (?) wanted an extra £750 deposit before they would let him view the property. She said that she would pay £500 but he would need to pay another £250.

DS asked who this company was (not found on companies house) and their contact details so he could discuss it with them. She replied that they ’do not speak to prospective tenants’.

She also sent him her passport details by email as proof of her identity. Trouble was that the Passport had a spelling mistake in her name 🙄 🚩

Bank notified & they’re dealing with it.

Big problem is now DS is starting work on Monday but will have nowhere to live by the end of the month. As it’s quite a tourist area the Airbnbs and bed & breakfasts are thousands. He’s on the list at local estate agents but he has no salary history yet. They are really out of his price range but we’ll help him.

Just as an aside UC have paid him nothing for months, just the odd £15 here and there.

He’s desperately worried that he will lose his job.

A 15 minute car journey sounds like Uber territory to me.

Any reason you can’t take and collect initially given his first day is on… Monday?

He’s fine for Monday, but he won’t have anywhere to stay come the end of the month, when the two weeks he is allowed to stay at the company accommodation ends. (It’s in the OP.)

I hope your ds gets sorted. My ds graduated last July and started his permanent job in December (he was headhunted from university but still had to go through all the motions and checks). He was lucky that he signed up for a 3 month internship while he waited and he was able to use that as proof of earnings, employer reference etc.
He is living in a hmo about 150 miles from us and tbh it's not great. He didn't know the area beforehand and apparently it is known as 'crack central' locally!! His housemates are okay and he's only paying £450 a month rent inclusive of bills so he's saving madly to get a deposit. I'd hate to be young now!

Nope. My alarms would go off, my pump would kick in.

I would also die if I stopped taking my inhaler. And probably if I didn’t wear my glasses as I would walk under a bus. Are they all terminal illnesses as you call them?

And if you want to wallow, not live life to the full, that’s up to you. People don’t always die prematurely with T1 in this day and age.

I hope newly diagnosed people / parents of newly diagnosed kids don’t come across negative nancies like you !

I have a cgm, I tried pumps but they just didn’t work for me, which is a huge pain.

Has he been claiming / earning jobseekers etc? Does he need or get PIP?

THe Access to Work scheme fund might help.

People who are young now and love in the UK are unlikely to have significantly higher rates of early morbidity compared to the general population. This is due to a very rapid improvement in technology and therefore glycemic control.

My DC does everything their friends do and more. This is because diabetes has always just been part of them. Never a barrier.

Once he starts the job he can see if there’s a company intranet - he might well find a house share or a rental that way.

Op - you have to be guarantor and pay! He’s not able to. How do you think everyone else manages?

Didcot. 25 mins on bus and lots of rooms available. Have you looked at Didcot?

I agree. Didcot is your best bet. I'm from South Oxfordshire and a lot of young adults from this area rent or buy in Didcot because its cheaper than surrounding villages. It's not pretty but its fine. It has a station so he can visit home in London or go into Oxford.

How long is his probationary period?
