I think the tax codes do sort themselves out but if you overpay tax they don't offset it against next year's allowance any more you have to claim it back yourself.

Oh yes of course, if you’re doing irregular hours, then it’s definitely important to check you’ve been paid correctly. Ds works for a major supermarket and I think all the info is on their staff app

Some great news here from people! And, goodness, I have tried to explain about tax etc to my DC, but it hasn't become a serious issue for DD yet. (DS navigated paying tax overseas on his gap year though!) I am on a little trip at the moment, but September will very much be about helping both DC prepare for their next stages.

DD has just had a letter from HMRC saying that she’d overpaid tax (by just over £800) and telling her how to claim the rebate. So it does get sorted. Eventually. I think this must be from her switching jobs last autumn.

Yes my DD got one this time last year, she is owed £11 but it is still on the Things To Do list. DS had one for a bit more and we did do his, it was quite easy.

DS DID get the job in Worcester. They phoned him today!

He started his grad tutor job today so he could have done with knowing last week.

It's all a bit fraught by complications now and looking at rental properties.

Journalism is very disorganised, considering what they do. All kind of 'oh , let us know when you can start' type levels of casual.

My DS looked on spareroom and got a professional house share. It meant he had other young people around, all bills taken care of and a cleaner and gardener included. He could move in very quickly too. It just meant he could focus on starting a job, not sorting out internet or buying furniture. He paid £760 all bills inc. He only stayed 6 months but got to know the area and took one housemate with him as a lodger.

Yes, there's quite a lot on RightMove so it shouldn't be too hard to find somewhere.

DD has also secured a house with spareroom.com. The good thing with it is that bills are included - think this might be for all of them on there? £600pm so way less than anything on rightmove.
she’s now done 4 days of her job and all is going well. I’m trying no to dwell on how far away she is but at least with school starting again I have other things to think about!

The one decent looking one on Spare Room had a lower age limit of 23 and DS is 22, annoyingly.

That is probably flexible if he has a job. Often they don't want young-party-animal students. DS was the youngest by about 6 years until a 22 year old moved in.

And hoping all the other jobs secured are going well too, paid or unpaid…the opportunities to notch up some experience in their areas of interest will pay off.

Brilliant news @Piggywaspushed - well done to ds! Worcester is a nice area to live - my dh went to school there and I grew up in north Worcestershire. I know a couple of young people living in house shares there; not sure what they're paying but I don't think it's expensive. Hope he finds something soon. And if they're flexible about start date, presumably he can set one to suit his situation? Does he have a notice period with the tutoring job?

I think a lot of jobs don't have set start dates - dd's didn't either, in fact the date she requested kept getting pushed back, because of delays with her DBS.

Great news about your dd @NCTDN . Sorry she's so far away, but hopefully you can arrange a catch up half way soon? Is she living with her boyfriend, I can't remember?

Dd is back from Morocco with a tattoo in a very prominent place which didn't turn out as planned 😩She also got yet another £60 parking fine whilst she was away - I haven't told her yet. She seems to get them almost every month, she just can't keep track of time or notice parking restrictions 😬

Ds turned up like a whirlwind at 10.30 last night with bags and bags of ingredients, feeling stressed because he needed to make a carrot cake, apple crumble and feta and melon salad for his girlfriend's birthday today. Cooking started about 11 and while I was out picking up dd and her friends from the station he rang me in a panic saying he'd forgotten double cream! Obviously I couldn't find any at that time of night.. I think he must have been up all night and he had to get the cream early this morning but he managed everything. I really hope she appreciates the effort, especially because I stayed up til 1.30 helping with the crumble!
