Feeling a bit down today at my DSs getting older, not long until empty nest.

What age did your older children keep coming on holiday with you until?

OP posts:

I stopped holidaying with my parents at around 19 but then started again at 35 when I had my own kids! We all go away together at least once a year now.

See it as a different chapter rather than “the end”

Both our eldest and youngest DD's had their last holiday abroad with us at 18. We have since been ditched in favour of friends and boyfriends 😂

But we are okay with that. I was the same at their age and we want them to have fun.

Our eldest is now 25 and mentioned how nice it would be to have a family holiday at some point so I guess we are starting to be cool again 😎

LoyalMember · 31/01/2026 18:58

I think any adult children holidaying with their parents past the age of 18 are freeloading oddballs.

ZoomPup1 · 31/01/2026 18:59

Eldest is 23 and still wants to come with us!

JulietSierra · 31/01/2026 19:01

Mine will be 22 and 19 in the summer and still are coming away with us. They do holidays with friends too but I guess an all expenses paid holiday funded by the bank of Mum and Dad is just too hard to refuse! I do think they enjoy our company too!

Rayqueen2026 · 31/01/2026 19:03

We still holiday once a year with our parents of not twice as do my siblings and the grandkids, love it

Thistooshallpass. · 31/01/2026 19:03

22 and 19 here too and no signs of giving up family holidays . They go on their own ones too .. but who is going to turn down a 5* all expenses paid long haul holiday.

MidWayThruJanuary · 31/01/2026 19:04

Mine are in their 20s and still love to come with us. And we love to have them.

😂 wow! We sometimes holiday with my parents or PIL - we’re the ones paying 😂

OP we are in our 30s and go away with our parents probably every other year (one year mine, one year PIL!).

Nourishinghandcream · 31/01/2026 19:07

We stopped going at 16.

Responsible enough to look after the house in our parents absence .

LottieMary · 31/01/2026 19:08

I’m 43 and just booked a holiday with my parents and family including my husband and kids for this summer. I’ve been with them most years alongside my nuclear family holiday.
and sometimes with my mum separately too

Lifejigsaw · 31/01/2026 19:10

Pah never! We still have two holidays all together a year, and now with grand kids too, and it’s wonderful!

chasetheace99 · 31/01/2026 19:10

Last family holiday we had was in 2019, and DC were late teens, early 20’s, one brought a partner. I’m pretty sure if we offered to pay, they’d all be happy to come again and we probably will once they have children

Mine are mid-20s freeloading oddballs then Grin And we love it! Partners also welcome, and we can afford to treat them.

They holiday themselves of course, but much cheaper holidays given their incomes.

Really? We go away with MIL every other year. 3 adult children, partners, kids. We pay for ourselves, hire a big villa and have a bloody brilliant time.

Dartmoorcheffy · 31/01/2026 19:14

Also FIL lives in a European tourist resort so we do freeload to go and see him, but he loves our visits and we take him out for dinner or buy and cook for him.

Mine are 23 and 21 and still very keen to come on holiday with us. We’re a really happy family of four - and our holidays are always great fun - so I do understand why they want the holidays to continue. They both have lots of friends and very busy lives, and they have gone on holidays with friends, but they have no boyfriends or girlfriends yet, although they’ve both had a few dalliances so to speak. I’m not sure what to think about it really - I mean it’s expensive taking them on holiday but we love them to bits, and the time we spend together is so wonderful, I’m mainly just really grateful for what I’ve got, but it would also be good to see them moving on to the next stage of their lives.

HippeePrincess · 31/01/2026 19:17

I last had a family holiday when I was 15, I’ve been away with just my dad travelling a couple of times and did a weekend away with them once with my kids but my step mum doesn’t really like to include us.

Hedgesgalore · 31/01/2026 19:17

Dd came with us in 2024.
We went skiing together that year too.

She organised both trips. I paid, she pays me back when she can. She's 26 yo.

She's talking about making plans for 2028.

She would absolutely come with us on every trip/holiday if we let her 😂

Ds (29) came with us to Amalfi in 2018. He calls into the house every other day for coffee.

Last whole family holiday we had was when my son was 17 and DD 15.

I must be well because I still go on holiday of my parents and i'm fifty one. My kids are oddballs and that's why we love having them with us.
They also go on holidays with their friends.

BassinBas · 31/01/2026 19:22

Mine are in their twenties and still come. They go away with pals too but family holidays= nicer hotels!

Chinsupmeloves · 31/01/2026 19:26

It was age 17 for me as after that I was away at university amd did my own travelling with friends. Xx

StrawberryJamAndRaspberryPie · 31/01/2026 19:27

The last holiday I went on with mum I was 15. But now my sister has had her toddler they go away every year 😂 I think grandkids bring them round again

Chinsupmeloves · 31/01/2026 19:28

I look back and think this is a shame though, would have been nice to still go on holiday together. Some friends have regularly continued to go on holiday with their families, they all live in different places, so meet up every year somewhere, which is lovely. Xx
