Thread 55 - Covid GCSE Cohort - Autumn 25 - Yr 4 Uni and Graduates

Oblomov25 · 09/10/2025 12:55

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.
Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp
Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

@crazycrofter fab news on DDs job, sounds like a great place to be!

@Aslockton DS1 has been called to jury service at the end of March (I think its then), I don't think he understands quite how tedious it can be with all the waiting around.

Speaking of DS, he has just handed his notice in. 😫 He has been offered another job but I don't think it's going to right for him and that he's possible jumping out of the frying pan into the fire but my advice has been waved aside. He is so fed up where he is currently he's ready to take anything else just to leave. We shall see.

@EndlessDistraction I agree entirely, as much as he couldn't control the tic the BBC should not have aired it, it is really quite stunning that hey left it in the broadcast.

EndlessDistraction · 24/02/2026 13:04

Yes, deeply offensive language and the poor guy must be absolutely mortified. The film I Swear is brilliant though, if you haven't seen it it's back in cinemas now.

crazycrofter · 24/02/2026 14:38

I've been meaning to watch that. Awful situation all round though!

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn that sounds like a worrying scenario for you re ds' job, but hopefully it will work out. It's horrible not being able to control their decisions isn't it!

Ds has got his first choice study abroad option - in the south of France - so that's exciting! He also got 75 in his only January exam 😃

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 24/02/2026 21:08

@crazycrofter yes i am nervous and being both a natural worrier and also a bit of a control freak makes me over think everything! 😬

Amazing for your DS with the study abroad and brilliant on that 75! 🙌

craggyrat · 25/02/2026 06:57

Great news for your DS @crazycrofter!

mummyinbeds · 25/02/2026 17:17

Ooh. Exciting news on France @crazycrofter A piece of advice - start the visa process as early as possible! And make 3 copies of every bit of paperwork imaginable.
And well done to your DS on his fantastic exam mark.

Thanks @mummyinbeds - I might be coming to you for advice! Not only have you had a son go to France, but he’s a disorganised last-minute merchant like my Ds 🤣

This is a bit outing but as well as his theatre stuff my son is in the band of a singer he met at uni. She’s been shortlisted for Tramlines festival but it’s down to a public vote.

The link to vote is here & her name is Holly Rolfe https://tramlines.org.uk/explore/apply-to-play/?utm_source=ig&utm_medium=social&utm_content=link_in_bio&fbclid=PAdGRleAQJfBJleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZA8xMjQwMjQ1NzQyODc0MTQAAaefAjKkV2HjAuc1KsvsPUlUIXpu5Vg5fhDBEJtThQq3-oPcJ0rr9HLAMJ8shA_aem_1B-nBs52NZp1WazP7Tk56g

Voted for her - hope it happens!

Comefromaway · 25/02/2026 22:23

That's brilliant news @BlueMarigold!

AnneOfCleavage · 28/02/2026 13:35

That’s wonderful news @BlueMarigoldHow exciting!
Also great news re DD and her TA job and your DS getting his first choice abroad option @crazycrofter
Fingers crossed Holly gets the most votes @Comefromawaywhat an exciting opportunity for your DS.

DD is over half way through her last big placement school and got great feedback on her teaching with her observations. She’s trying to write her CV and wonders if a personal profile, education and employment history will be enough or if she needs to write a personal statement too. She’ll need to start applying for jobs in a few weeks ready for September as teachers hand their notice in just before Easter hols to finish in Summer.
Shes driven to Southampton to watch Legally Blonde with a friend as a little treat today.

BlueMarigold · 28/02/2026 14:33

Thank you everyone! I am so relieved she has something now. Congratulations to all the other DC getting jobs. They have come a long way since getting GCSEs cancelled!

EwwSprouts · 28/02/2026 14:47

@BlueMarigold Fantastic news! What a fabulous career step.
