18 son first holiday without mum

My son has just gone to Tenerife with 2 of his friends. Yesterday just before he was to leave we ended up at hospital after he was stung by a wasp. The doctor gave him antibiotics but advised no drinking. I was worried before now I am even more worried. I text him today and he already forgot to take one and said mum I will take it when I have had tea stop harassing me. I get that but I am just worried because it’s his first holiday without his parents except school trips and remembering to take his antibiotics .my question is should I keep reminding him or just let him do his thing

Just leave him alone and he will be fine. Has he got full travel insurance? If yes stop stressing!

Notaripoff · 11/07/2025 23:29

Generally, I think leave him to it.

However I am confused. Why did he need antibiotics after a wasp sting?! Did he get stung yesterday?

If the Dr didi explicitly said not to drink, he really must not drink. Most antibiotics are fine with alcohol - but there is one particular you you absolutely can't drink when taking.

And do you know what antibiotic that is

I will leave him to it. I know I can be over bearing but I think it’s because I do everything for my children which is not good either.

The doctor said it was swollen and hot so he needed antibiotics

Oh dear! 18 year olds make mistakes. They learn from them. Is he going to university? Why do everything for them at 18? He’ll grow up without you hovering.

DaisyChain505 · 12/07/2025 09:48

He’s 18, leave him to it. He needs to learn to handle himself. He was stung by a wasp not cut with a rusty saw, he’ll be fine.

You need to learn to take a step back and stop smothering your children otherwise you’ll push them away.

Why do you do everything for an 18 year old?

ohtowinthelottery · 12/07/2025 09:53

Leave him to it. If he doesn't take the meds he'll face the consequences.
Is he going off to Uni?
The stories my DS told (after he graduated) of things that happened at Uni would make your toes curl.
Just glad I didn't know at the time!

Carol52 · 12/07/2025 11:18

Your right . He is going to uni but he is not far away😂. The antibiotic is fluxocillian

It was a silly question.

Myotherusernamesafunnyone · 12/07/2025 18:36

A very quick google tells you it’s fine to drink alcohol and take flucloxacillin

You can normally drink alcohol with this, unless there are any other specific issues for him or medication he is taking. Metronidazole is the antibiotic that you can’t drink alcohol with - it’s given for dental infections.

Musicaltheatremum · 12/07/2025 18:38

1.You can drink on flucloxacillin.

  1. Antibiotics are handed out far too easily for insect bites and stings. Your sons reaction sounds like a typical allergic reaction to the sting. I'd relax
ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 12/07/2025 18:43

It’s a bit late now if he doesn’t have this, but there is a health card you obtain via NHS which gives free access to emergency medical treatment in EU countries. It’s a good idea to get one for all your family if you don’t have them already.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 12/07/2025 18:46

I wonder sometimes if we all panic about our late teens on their first holidays abroad/ festivals / at uni etc because we can all remember what we got up to at that age🤣. But just to remember- we all survived!

Jesus my 3yo was stung by a wasp today, she brushed it off and carried in playing. Should I have taken her to hospital for a wasp sting? Seems abit over dramatic to me. Why was that even necessary? Iv never in my life heard of anyone going to hospital for a wasp sting! Stop molly coddling him ffs

Some people can have unknown allergies, if it’s particularly swollen it’s worth getting it checked. The doctors would not have given out antibiotics if they hadn’t thought it a sensible precaution.

Wasp stings can become infected and cellulitis is serious, can be life threatening. Some people have bad reactions to wasp stings. No need to be so condescending.

I thought the same - surely you wouldn’t go to A&E with a wasp sting! No wonder people have to wait for hours!

I know it's hard but you have to let go. My 18 year old has just been away for 10 days travelling through Europe and it was so hard with all the worrying. But he was fine. They have to learn. You've told him, he knows, now it's up to him. I'm sure it was just a precaution on the doctors side so even if he completely forgets, don't worry. Definitely don't remind him again xx

People literally die from adverse reactions to stings. As well I'm sure you know.
