My son has just gone to Tenerife with 2 of his friends. Yesterday just before he was to leave we ended up at hospital after he was stung by a wasp. The doctor gave him antibiotics but advised no drinking. I was worried before now I am even more worried. I text him today and he already forgot to take one and said mum I will take it when I have had tea stop harassing me. I get that but I am just worried because it’s his first holiday without his parents except school trips and remembering to take his antibiotics .my question is should I keep reminding him or just let him do his thing

People literally die from adverse reactions to stings. As well I'm sure you know.

OP didnt take her son to hospital because she thought he was going to die from it! She took him because it was a little swollen no doubt, which is completely normal for a wasp sting. I understand going if its still causing problems after a few days but to go the same day because of minor swelling is ridiculous!

Laiste · 12/07/2025 19:20

I think you know you're being overprotective OP.

A good friend of mine is like this about her son. He's 21 now and even though he lives (miles) away from home with his GF and has been abroad before with mates she's still stressing about how he'll cope going abroad soon.

I've got all DDs and never got like this. I trusted them to stay alive and they always have/do ...

Is it a <tin hat on> mum and son thing?

LaughingCat · 12/07/2025 19:30

Glad you’re going to leave him to it - the alternative is you a) drive him nuts on his lads holiday, b) make him the laughing stock of his mates and c) continue to seriously impact your son’s problem solving and resilience building skills.

Please cut the apron strings - I know you just want him to be safe but I can tell you from experience that it’s smothering, controlling and the resentment for always having to instantly respond to an unreasonable level of maternal anxiety all the time gets in the way of a good relationship.

Just take a deep breath, handle your own fears and see him when he gets back.

She was right though - so no need to be rude.

I imagine she only did that as he was due to fly to Tenerife the next day, better be safe than sorry.

I stand by it being over dramatic though. The chance of an allergic reaction or a sting being deadly is very, very slim. Theres no need to go to hospital for a little swelling! Hospitals are on their knees without treating a minor sting.

You can normally drink alcohol with this, unless there are any other specific issues for him or medication he is taking. Metronidazole is the antibiotic that you can’t drink alcohol with - it’s given for dental infections.

My doctor always advised me not to drink alchohol when taking any antibiotics.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 12/07/2025 21:05

He will be fine. Don’t worry, if he drinks with Flucloxacillin it won’t hurt.

Metronidazole and tinidazole are the ones you shouldn’t drink with.

JayJayj · 12/07/2025 21:10

My husband is 40, got antibiotics yesterday. Hasn’t taken any today because I did not remind him 🙄
Leave him to it. He’ll learn or not! But if you pester he won’t get the chance.

Jesus my 3yo was stung by a wasp today, she brushed it off and carried in playing. Should I have taken her to hospital for a wasp sting? Seems abit over dramatic to me. Why was that even necessary? Iv never in my life heard of anyone going to hospital for a wasp sting! Stop molly coddling him ffs

Wow what a girl. That’s exactly what my son did but obviously the infection made his neck swollen and the pharmacy said cal 111 straight away.
do nt be so quick yo judge in future.

Fair enough but I probably would've mentioned that in the OP because location of sting and how badly its swollen is quite important. A sting on the arm with a little swelling and I wouldn't be so worried about a couple of missed antibiotics. But the neck is different so yes he should be taking them. You cant remind him every day though hes an adult away on holiday, id just leave him to it and probably mention it in another few days. He'll just get annoyed with you keep reminding him.

It was not the same day it was two days later and still swollen it was 111 and a pharmacist told me to go FFS

Hopefully he’s informed his travel insurance company that he’s recently been and seen a dr and has been given antibiotics which he’s going to be taking whilst on holiday?
If there’s any complications from the bee sting or from taking antibiotics whilst on holiday and needs to be seen by a dr or go to hospital, his insurance won’t pay unless it’s been declared!
Some insurance companies want you to declare everything that you have beeb to your dr about for the past 2 years or you won’t be covered for those illnesses whilst away!

Maybe you should have said all this in your 1st post then? rather than the drip feed that his neck was v swollen and pharmacist recommended you take him to hospital?

PeonyBulb · 13/07/2025 08:30

My DD 18 has been away with friends for a week

She had her GHIC card and travel insurance

People react differently to bee / wasp stings

Nothing wrong with going to A&E if it’s an unusual reaction.

Your right . He is going to uni but he is not far away😂. The antibiotic is fluxocillian

He can drink on that. It’s metronidazole you can’t drink on. I wouldn’t drink heavily on any new medication but a drink or two would be fine. I agree, he’s an adult leave him to it.

As a child I wasn't bothered by wasp stings either but this has changed when I got older.

I now have a terrible reaction to wasp stings. Last time I was stung on my little finger and my whole arm swelled up. The hospital gave me antihistamines and I had to wear a sling for a week to help the swelling go down.

The previous time, I was stung on my toe and my whole leg swelled so much I couldn't walk.

Both times I ended in A &E when over the counter treatment didn't work.

It’s a bit late now if he doesn’t have this, but there is a health card you obtain via NHS which gives free access to emergency medical treatment in EU countries. It’s a good idea to get one for all your family if you don’t have them already.

He has a eu health card
