This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.
Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp
Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Thanks for the new thread. Reposting this in case people see it here and can inspire me!
DD is back to Austria on Monday and it's her 21st two weeks later. We won't be there. What can I get to put in her luggage for her to open on her birthday? I have no ideas!

Thanks for the new thread @Delphigirl, reporting in.

@NCTDN - jewellery? A calendar? A book? A gift card in appropriate currency (euros?) to buy a treat locally? Sorry can't think of anything too original - good luck!

EwwSprouts · 28/12/2024 19:53

Thanks for the new thread Delphi.

Delphigirl · 28/12/2024 20:20

Thanks everyone!
I have had such a lovely Christmas break, no doubt also because of how relentless work was before Christmas. I practically crawled to the 21st. We then had the most FANTASTIC party - 90 people, almost 1/2 of whom were 20-something friends of the kids who I’ve known since they were v small, and what a fab group of young people they are. Great music dj’d by ds2, I danced all night, fab food including late night macaroni cheese which everyone hoovered up - I will never have a party without macaroni cheese at 11 pm again - and … drumroll…. We drank the cocktail guy’s bar dry! It was brilliant. Then had a really lovely Christmas and aftermath. I sat on the sofa yesterday afternoon after all our house guests had finally left and tried to work out what day it was… decided it was def Wednesday only to discover it was Friday 🤣🤣🤣🤣
So I have a whole additional week off work next week, going to get back on the salads, do some walking, do some work to get ready for work (I know, I know).
Hope you and yours have also had a lovely time. X

What a fabulous update @Delphigirl , you guys definitely know how to create a party vibe, glad it all went to plan and more.

Hope everyone else is enjoying their breaks, even with the challenges some are facing with elderly parents. My own right now is our poorly pooch, just hoping she turns the corner from a very bad bout of gastro. Hoping it’s nothing worse 🤞

Seeline · 28/12/2024 21:58

Sounds fantastic @Delphigirl !!

Hope doggie is on the mend soon @ealingwestmum

Shimy · 28/12/2024 22:11

Placemarking. Thanks @Delphigirl that sounds like a fab party. The Macaroni cheese is what did it for me. Huge thumbs up, pls send some my way next time.

craggyrat · 29/12/2024 07:52

Party sounds absolutely amazing @Delphigirl !

ExpensiveDecoration · 29/12/2024 14:04

That does sound like a fabulous party @Delphigirl I must admit we don’t do proper parties, mainly because our house is tiny, but I do enjoy them when we go to them at other people’s houses. I like the multi-generational aspect, when I was my DCs age I wouldn’t have been caught dead at one of my parents parties, but I started going to theirs again in my 30s. Socialising with both generations (ours and the DCs) seems much more normal now, we had a get-together at a friend’s the other night and all the youngsters went off to the pub after an hour or so and left us oldies to it, My DCs also come out with me and my college friends and their DCs from time to time, mainly when we go to the football together, it’s nice.

Oblomov24 · 30/12/2024 08:34

Delph the party sounds heavenly and like Shimy the macaroni cheese won it for me.

KingscoteStaff · 30/12/2024 09:02

Thank you for new thread @Delphigirl .

DD is on one leg and crutches after a tendon operation on the 16th Dec. Hopefully after a check up today she can put weight on the Massive Boot! Newcastle have swapped her next rotation from psychiatrics to paeds, as apparently you need to be able to run in the psych ward…

DSis and I are sharing hospital visits for my DM - but that’s going to be tricky once we both go back to work next Monday…

We really are at the ‘pulled both way’ stage. But lots to be grateful for as we nervously sidle into 2025!

Happy New Year one and all 🎉

Posted on the last thread before I found this one but caught up on the news there. Thanks @Delphigirl for this new thread and your party sounded awesome.

Had the quietest NYE in over 20years as DH and I just celebrated it together - despite other invites - as DD was at a party with her boyf meeting a lot of his friends for the 1st time. DH cooked us a 3 course meal and we watched WSM. Lovely. So many fireworks despite v windy conditions so was glad we waited up as we'd most certainly have been woken up.

Hope your doggo is on the mend now @ealingwestmum

I hope things get easier for you @KingscoteStaff with what you have going on.

crazycrofter · 01/01/2025 11:10

Happy New Year everyone!

We had our first without the kids in 20 years - dd was with her boyfriend and his family/friends and Ds was en route to Australia.
