Thread 47- Covid GCSE Cohort - Summer's running away from us!

1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonLatte · 05/07/2023 19:38

...it will be Christmas before we know it.

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Great news Monkey, congrats to him!

ealingwestmum · 17/08/2023 10:17

Am following all news but not able to check all individually. Very well done to those who are able to progress to next stages of their lives 👏👏

Volterra, so much going on for your DS. Your support in navigating him through is unquestionable, hope you equally are supported through this period of change.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 17/08/2023 10:21

@mummyinbeds I get the disappointment on grades but she'll stop worrying about that soon if she's got in where she wants to go - but well done on that A in maths!!

@Monkey2001 Fab news on the A* for your DS!

@Monkey

Seeline · 17/08/2023 10:28

@Monkey2001 congratulations! Good to hear so many are heading to UEA. It's a lovely uni, so hope they'll all be happy.

crazycrofter · 17/08/2023 10:34

Brilliant news @Monkey2001 - he's done so well to take a new subject and go through the whole med school application process again, whilst also working. He'll be a fab doctor!

Sorry there's disappointment @mummyinbeds , are there any subjects that would be worth re-marking/reviewing marking? Where is she off to?

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 17/08/2023 09:52

Well done to your DD @singingstones

Thank you Just Smile

Cantonet · 17/08/2023 11:00

Brilliant news @Monkey2001 Ds 🎉

Shimy · 17/08/2023 11:01

@Cantonet @Delphigirl @singingstones Congratulations! Waving at you from my lovely seafront balcony.

@Volterra Hand holding here..you will get through this and your ds will come through. Sometimes the path to success may seem a bit crooked but there is learning being acquired whether they know it or not during these times. He is very lucky to have you for his mum and I'm sure he will steer in the right direction. DS1* *was a big worry for a while but all the advising, encouraging mixed with warnings about where he was headed eventually all fell into place and he has definitely turned a corner.

Shimy · 17/08/2023 11:03

Congratulations to @Monkey2001 too, what a trooper!

It looks like we've another new UEA group. We had loads going off to UEA in 2019, very popular university.

Cantonet · 17/08/2023 11:05

And many congratulations to @singingstones & @mummyinbeds for getting where they wanted to.

Cantonet · 17/08/2023 11:07

OrangeCinnamonLatte · 17/08/2023 09:17

@Delphigirl good news !

@Cantonet congrats to Dd! My Aunt started at UCL in the 70s and has only just left for retirement!

Wow.
UCL must have changed so much over that time. I bet your Aunt has some tales to tell!

Cantonet · 17/08/2023 11:09

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 17/08/2023 09:00

@Delphigirl glad your visitor is happy enough despite not getting quite what he wanted.

@Cantonet amazing getting into the Bartlett, we’ll done your DD!

@Volterra I’m sorry to hear your update, I have no advice but send love and 💐. I hope you have people irl that are there to help you.

Thank you so much.

mummyinbeds · 17/08/2023 11:18

@crazycrofter she's going to Aberystwyth which she's delighted about. She's not close to any grade boundaries. The one she's most annoyed about was usually her favourite paper. She knew she'd messed up on one essay question but went from an expected A to a D on that paper. We're having a think about getting the paper checked but no hurry, she's off to the seaside for 3 years anyway.

Well done @Monkey2001 brilliant news.

crazycrofter · 17/08/2023 11:27

She’ll love it @mummyinbeds ! My dh went there and I visited a few times. Cheap too!

PhotoDad · 17/08/2023 11:42

Well done to @mummyinbeds @Cantonet @singingstones @Monkey2001 DC and anyone else I've missed.

That sounds really hard, @Volterra, sorry to hear that.

I'm back off to bed to see if I can nap. Was awake at 3 a.m., and have spent 3 hours in at school dealing with triumphs and disasters and helping people with paperwork. Anything else can be dealt with by email later. Our poor Careers Head will be there all day for several days, he is incredible.

Shimy · 17/08/2023 11:44

Congratulations to your DD @mummyinbeds . Lovely university. Have a wonderful day.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 17/08/2023 11:53

@mummyinbeds I love that, off to the seaside for three years! 😀

Zebracat · 17/08/2023 12:43

Huge congratulations to all the results people. @Volterra .I’m so sorry. This is rubbish for you.

BlueMarigold · 17/08/2023 13:38

Congratulations to all the DC who got grades to do their next steps!

Sorry to hear your situation @Volterra. Sending hugs x

I have kept up with this thread and just wanted to share my DD's good news.
After a very disappointed girl this time last year she is now delighted as she starts Newcastle in Sept to do Medicine.
The year out has done wonders and I have had so much support from people on here and on the medicine threads so thank you. @Monkey2001 @KingscoteStaff @kackle

ealingwestmum · 17/08/2023 13:48

Well done to her coffeeandbiscuittime, brilliant news.

coffeeandbiscuittime · 17/08/2023 14:00

@Volterra it's so hard, my 2nd is waiting for an ASD assessment.
As parents we just want them to be happy as well as independent.
Look after yourself as well.

Seeline · 17/08/2023 14:01

@coffeeandbiscuittime congratulations!
