Thread 47- Covid GCSE Cohort - Summer's running away from us!

1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonLatte · 05/07/2023 19:38

...it will be Christmas before we know it.

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Good luck to all those waiting on results!

@Monkey2001 hope everything works out, and if you have any questions about UEA just shout.

AnneOfCleavage · 17/08/2023 08:08

@NCTDN sorry missed out a letter

OublietteBravo · 17/08/2023 08:19

Good luck to everyone getting results today. How quickly the year has gone!

OublietteBravo · 17/08/2023 08:37

DD is doing an internship at a marketing agency at the moment. She’s absolutely loving it! Even with the commute to London. She says she can’t believe people get paid to do such a fun job! It’s nice that she’s doing something a bit more interesting for a few weeks after a summer of bar work and lifeguarding.

Ok visitor missed his grades but was offered foundation and he is happy with that so phew!

Volterra · 17/08/2023 08:53

Just popped in to say good luck to anyone waiting for results], especially @Monkey2001 ’s DS 🍀

Unfortunately not a positive update on DS. He’s not really any better than when he dropped out of university last year and doing nothing. Has an ASD diagnosis now and is conflicted about gender, well he would say he is now clear on it. Isn’t doing anything still.

There was a brief time when he had a small part time job for 2 weeks and was having driving lessons but only lasted a couple of weeks. He does engage with his counsellor and had taken himself off a couple of times to visit people in the last couple of months which is something I guess. I think it is going to take years to get him sorted and I am out of ideas so try not to think about it unless I have to .

Cantonet · 17/08/2023 08:53

All ok here for results day. Though DD only woke up a few minutes ago after calming tea last night 😁
Got into UCL to do Architecture.
I'm so so relieved ...

Delphigirl · 17/08/2023 08:54

Brilliant well done @cantonet! @Volterra im sorry, that sounds very difficult. Best wishes to your DS.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 17/08/2023 09:00

@Delphigirl glad your visitor is happy enough despite not getting quite what he wanted.

@Cantonet amazing getting into the Bartlett, we’ll done your DD!

@Volterra I’m sorry to hear your update, I have no advice but send love and 💐. I hope you have people irl that are there to help you.

Cantonet · 17/08/2023 09:01

I'm sorry to hear your news @Volterra.
We have been through similar with one of my younger ones & are now out the other side. It's so hard as a parent to know what to do for the best in this situation & my heart goes out to you 💐

Cantonet · 17/08/2023 09:03

Glad to hear the positive news @Delphigirl. Is this for Vet Med.?

Delphigirl · 17/08/2023 09:05

Yes vet med. brand new vet school at uclan. A lot of his group of applicants have been offered foundation - building up the second cohort as well as the first I think.

crazycrofter · 17/08/2023 09:05

Sorry to hear your news @Volterra , that sounds really hard. It’s good that he’s engaging with counselling though. These things take a long time, but if he’s engaging then I’m sure he will make progress.,

NCTDN · 17/08/2023 09:10

AnneOfCleavage · 17/08/2023 08:07

Thinking of you all with DC getting results today.

NCTN how was Austria? Hope the weather was good for you and you got to do and see all you wanted to.

Gutted for DD who has had her driving test cancelled tomorrow due to her examiner no longer working at the test centre. Her new date is her first day at Uni next month so hoping we can change it as not accepted that date obviously.

How annoying re driving test when it's not her fault Hmm You'd have thought they could find a replacement examiner.
Austria was lovely but weather wasn't great- lots and lots of rain so beautiful waterfalls!!!
I know on here there's been discussion about wiwikau (not as heated as the one on mn just about that!) but why on Earth do people post on there about their child and their uni place? I totally get doing it on their personal fb page but on that?!!

NCTDN · 17/08/2023 09:12

(Posting about exam results and uni places on here is totally different though. I just don't understand putting it on a public fb page).

OrangeCinnamonLatte · 17/08/2023 09:16

@Volterra sorry to read your news, it sounds a really difficult situ for you all💐

@Cantonet wow - well done on Bartlett!

@Volterra so sorry to hear you news. It must be tough.
Glad your visitor didn't cause too much stress @Delphigirl 😁

OrangeCinnamonLatte · 17/08/2023 09:17

@Delphigirl good news !

@Cantonet congrats to Dd! My Aunt started at UCL in the 70s and has only just left for retirement!

Well done to your dd @cantonet - that's amazing!

stoneysongs · 17/08/2023 09:29

DD did well at AS, uni plans are still on track phew. She is off to college at some point this morning to enrol for Y13.

Volterra I'm so sorry to hear about DS, I hope he recovers soon. It's a positive sign that he is engaging with counselling. Please feel free to vent on here if you want, there will be support and sympathy, and usually someone who has been there.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 17/08/2023 09:52

Well done to your DD @singingstones

AnneOfCleavage · 17/08/2023 09:53

Sorry to read your news @Volterra, that sounds difficult for you all but seems like he's taking baby steps which is positive. As parents we just want to wade in and fix things for our babies and my DH often reminds me to step back but I find it so hard.

NCTDN yuk to lots of rainy weather - we had one torrential day of rain and storms so feel v lucky although we had a nightmare with flights being cancelled and having to fly in to Germany first then get a train into Austria so wasn't stress free. Still waiting to hear re our claim to BA for expenses.

Congratulations to those with Uni places. I so remember the feeling of butterflies this time last year in my stomach waiting for UCAS to update as it was sooooo slow loading results.
Weirdly got a text from DD's Uni this morning saying to check clearing for a place. Told DD to ignore as she's in and got accommodation etc. Did anyone else's YP get a text? As she's on a gap year it's not so straightforward as not started yet.

mummyinbeds · 17/08/2023 10:02

Congratulations @Delphigirl @Cantonet @singingstones and any other successes I've missed.
Mixed emotions here - DD is in at her first choice but not with the grades she wanted. I'm immensely proud of her and I'm sure she'll be happy once she's processed it. She did improve last years C in Core Maths to an A 😁
She's already sorting out the uni admin, email set up, ID card photo.....

Monkey2001 · 17/08/2023 10:12

A* for DS, so off to UEA in September - hurray! There are 3 on the Mumsnet medicine thread going to UEA this year. Exciting times!

@Volterra hand hold from here, sounds really tough, but you will get through it. Everything is so intense at this age.

Congratulations to everyone who got what they wanted! 🥳
