Thread 47- Covid GCSE Cohort - Summer's running away from us!

1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonLatte · 05/07/2023 19:38

...it will be Christmas before we know it.

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Best of luck to everyone for tomorrow 😬🤞.I have a feeling of impending doom. But I feel this way with all A level exams.
Ever since dd1 failed to get into Vet school the first time around, as her A levels were wrongly marked. So if any of you get a surprise result, do remark!
DD received a CIE result last week & she was told before moderation she has an A for Art, so tomorrow she needs a B in Maths.

Monkey2001 · 16/08/2023 20:30

Just had a MEGA catch up after being away refurbishing DS1's flat for a couple of weeks. Sounds like most of you have had challenges of one sort or another over the last couple of weeks! Hope the Nottingham resit crew get results back promptly.

We just have 1 result tomorrow and no plan B. I don't know what time DS is going in, but he is going to try to resist looking at UCAS. Hope we will be joining @Seeline and her DD in a few weeks!

crazycrofter · 16/08/2023 21:16

Good luck to everyone waiting for results tomorrow!

Dd got a surprise B in history last year (surprise because she always got As in History and felt it went fine). School weren’t very interested in a re-mark as it didn’t affect her uni place and she was 4 marks off, but we went for it anyway. She got the A with 6 extra marks. So always worth going for it if you’re dubious about a grade.

crazycrofter · 16/08/2023 21:16

@Monkey2001 does ds need an A tomorrow?

Cantonet · 16/08/2023 21:22

@Monkey2001 the very best of luck for your ds tomorrow 🤞

EwwSprouts · 16/08/2023 22:06

@Monkey2001 Everything crossed for young monkey.

Delphigirl · 16/08/2023 22:44

Aurgh I have a kid staying the night who has done two A level resits and his place at vet school hangs on them. Friend of DSs. Really not sure I signed up for that potential drama. Have told him if he tanks them then I will be sympathetic but I still have to leave for work at 8.15 !!

Cantonet · 16/08/2023 22:58

@Delphigirl I don't envy you.
They probably won't sleep tonight. Unless they get utterly pissed!
Mind you I'm heading in the same direction 😀

283nouveauxnoms · 16/08/2023 23:25

Good luck to those with results tomorrow!

Delphigirl · 16/08/2023 23:29

Cantonet I am sorry to have to report that they are already totally pissed… 🫣

Cantonet · 16/08/2023 23:31

Oh dear @Delphigirl .
Have youu got earplugs?

Delphigirl · 16/08/2023 23:38

Luckily they are a long way away from my bedroom…!

NCTDN · 16/08/2023 23:52

Good luck to all with a level results...Wink

OrangeCinnamonLatte · 16/08/2023 23:54

Good luck for tomorrow for all needing it.

After the double whammy of last years GCSEs and A levels, I’m grateful to have a year off

They are in Tübingen! And I am somehow awake well before my alarm. Bah.

stoneysongs · 17/08/2023 07:02

Thank you Orange, I am whiling away the time by reading the Y13 thread, makes me very glad not to have so much at stake this year.

Best of luck to those awaiting news of uni places 🤞

sazzy5 · 17/08/2023 07:11

Good luck to everyone with results today, this time last year I couldn’t sleep, so hope you all did better than me.

mummyinbeds · 17/08/2023 07:15

I was up at 5am to take DS to work. This morning is going so slowly. DD has just woken up - her mood is not great but she's like that every morning🤣 @singingstones I'm avoiding the year 13 thread this morning - the BBC news scaremongering is bad enough.

stoneysongs · 17/08/2023 07:21

There is a story on the results thread where the DS announced "great news" to the mum yesterday and she thought his course must be in clearing with reduced grades, but actually he was celebrating getting hold of a fake ID for clubbing tonight 😂

Monkey2001 · 17/08/2023 07:43

DS is in no hurry to get results, "probably" going in around 10 and does not want to look at UCAS first. I thought he had forgotten that his log in details were ony laptop, but he has told me not to look too. Will be a long morning!

@crazycrofter his offer is an A, but I am expecting the universities to be a bit more flexible this year as grades are supposed to be back to 2019 levels. In 2019 lots of places allowed students who missed the grades in. In a "normal" year something like 40% miss their firm offer grades.

😱🤣🤣
no sign of life from my visitor yet. I, however, am on tenterhooks, gulping coffee

OrangeCinnamonLatte · 17/08/2023 08:00

Fuming with Dd who got drunk last night and decided to call me at 1.30 in the morning for cab money. I've told her if it happens again. fornsomething she could have sprted beforehand, I will wait until she is fast asleep and then awaken her in similar manner.
AIBU ?

Off tocheck on results thread.

Thinking of you all with DC getting results today.

NCTN how was Austria? Hope the weather was good for you and you got to do and see all you wanted to.

Gutted for DD who has had her driving test cancelled tomorrow due to her examiner no longer working at the test centre. Her new date is her first day at Uni next month so hoping we can change it as not accepted that date obviously.
