Thread 46 - GCSE Covid Cohort , Searching for Summer Solstice

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Be warned there might be lots of 'Uni Freshers' chat this time of year. My experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

He would like to work in sports journalism ,really. His other goal is civil service, but I think now he ahs swapped degree he is less keen on that.

singingstones · 01/07/2023 20:21

I know @ProggyMat, doesn't it look fascinating, I was reading out all the modules to DH the other day and we are both very jealous!

I am looking forward to hearing all about it, hopefully much more intelligible than neuroscience. He was all excited the other day when that Bronze Age sword was found in Germany.

Great news for your DS Piggy, hope he enjoys it.

PhotoDad · 01/07/2023 20:40

@Piggywaspushed That's a great opportunity for him!

@singingstones Ooooh, another degree for me to take in my eventual retirement. I'll add it to the list. 😀

singingstones · 01/07/2023 20:40

How many are currently on the list @PhotoDad 😂

PhotoDad · 01/07/2023 21:10

@singingstones A good three or four!

BlueMarigold · 01/07/2023 22:41

That’s great news for your DS @Piggywaspushed

icanbewhatiwant · 02/07/2023 07:12

I've just been catching up on everyone's news. Ds starts his full time summer job on Monday. He's dreading the getting up early. He's been sleeping until 4pm every day. 2 or 3 times a week he's been getting up and going to the gym at 8am. Then he comes home and goes back to bed. So it'll be a shock to the system. He would like to keep going to the gym as he's trying to muscle up and put on weight (currently weighs 7 stone 10lbs) but he thinks the gym will be too difficult to fit in. I'm glad he's going to be getting up as it irritates me when he sleeps all day. I know it shouldn't but it does.
He says he has no idea when they get year 1 results. But he might know and is choosing not to tell. I know he's done ok though.

estherfrewen · 02/07/2023 08:48

@Piggywaspushed - that's great news !

DS still waiting to hear about results and various summer job applications. Still lifeguarding and sainsbury's interview Tues. He is swimming a lot and going to gym every day too.

I'm dreading tomorrow. Called back after mammogram so follow up tests.

NCTDN · 02/07/2023 08:55

@estherfrewen hope it's all ok Flowers

Cantonet · 02/07/2023 09:06

@estherfrewen the very best of luck for tomorrow.
@Photodad your daughter's illustrations are just brilliant. I love her & your daughters enthusiasm & positivity.
A bad night sleep here as I was phoned at 1 am from Hong Kong to say Dd2 (18) was missing. She was meant to be back at the hotel in order to catch a taxi at 8am to the airport for a Melbourne flight.
Of course she'd decided to go night clubbing with several friends last night. Dd1was frantically phoning all her friends who were still in bed. They ecentually tracked her down to her friends apartment where she'd slept thru' her alarm & was still drunk. So it was a mad rush to get to the airport in time an hour & a quarter before the flight. Well, they made it! I really didn't think they would let them on the flight. I'm so glad she was safe. Dh was absolutely distraught & useless. Dd2 was brilliant, calm & constructive. No wonder she says she doesn't want children!

crazycrofter · 02/07/2023 09:08

Hope you get the all clear @estherfrewen, that must be worrying.

Hope ds can adjust his sleep patterns @icanbewhatiwant .

estherfrewen · 02/07/2023 09:25

Thanks everyone. Goodness @Cantonet - that must have been so stressful!

ealingwestmum · 02/07/2023 09:33

Oh dear :(

That's a double whammy of bad news.

Hope it's all OK, ester .

PhotoDad · 02/07/2023 10:20

Hope all is well, @estherfrewen.

Piggywaspushed · 02/07/2023 10:20

With an h! Sorry!

ProggyMat · 02/07/2023 10:21

Sending positive vibes @estherfrewen

singingstones · 02/07/2023 11:59

Good luck @estherfrewen

If it helps I had this last year and (perhaps stupidly) found some stats - even for people called back for further investigation the chances of it being anything awful are still really really low. Low enough that I wasn't worried and I habitually fear the worst about every little niggle.

Shuddering at that story @Cantonet, glad to hear it turned out all right in the end. Hats off to DD1.

Delphigirl · 02/07/2023 12:07

Hi everyone!
@estherfrewen i will keep everything tightly crossed for you. So sorry you are dealing with this worry.
@Cantonet - what a rollercoaster! Love the long distance search party. Those sorts of things tend to happen with amazing regularity in Hong Kong … casts mind back to 1993…. 🤣
@PhotoDad i remain in awe of your DDs talent. Love what she is doing and she is visibly gaining in assurance with every example of her work you post. So lovely to see.
@Piggywaspushed well done to DS on the work experience, I hope he has a great time. It is by far the most useful thing they can do I think in terms of getting a proper look at working life and seeing what floats their boat and what does not. My ds1 is changing every week in his internship and it is fascinating to see and hear about. Just learning useful lessons like you have to tell people you have capacity and ask for work/to assist on a project, it isn’t necessarily the case that anyone is tracking the juniors, or even thinking about them much at all!

Oblomov23 · 02/07/2023 12:36

Good luck for tomorrow @estherfrewen.

@Cantonet, how stressful, phew. I would not be happy with dd2 re the unnecessary stress!

crazycrofter · 02/07/2023 12:55

@Cantonet that sounds soo stressful! Glad she was located in the end and caught her fiight. Dd in Croatia is no longer showing as active on my tracker so I’m wondering if her phone has packed in again. Her friends were supposed to arrive yesterday so I hope she’ll text us from one of their phones at some point!

EwwSprouts · 02/07/2023 17:26

@estherfrewen I have everything crossed for you.

@Piggywaspushed What a fabulous opportunity!

@Cantonet Glad all came good. A 1am call is always going to be unsettling.

@crazycrofter Hope yours checks in with you soon too.

283nouveauxnoms · 02/07/2023 20:20

@estherfrewen good luck for tomorrow, will be thinking of you.

@Cantonet blimey, no wonder you didn’t sleep! Glad all is ok.

@crazycrofter hope she gets in co tact soon!
