This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Be warned there might be lots of 'Uni Freshers' chat this time of year. My experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

@OrangeCinnamonLatte no - no real cost implication. They have said if they did it for her they would have to offer it to all the others with the same condition... Which would still not be a real problem as other universities do this as a default!

Mmmm tricky! I know the last uni I worked at offered as much as possible. You'd think there'd be some standardising.
I wonder if the SU might me of help?

All the best to her @OrangeCinnamonLatte , it sounds like she’s being positive and proactive and it’s not just about the boyfriend, which is good. Hope she gets an offer she’s happy with. Am I remembering rightly that she was never 100% sure about Cardiff originally?

Dd is sending me info about educational psychology and occupational therapy, and thinking about what she wants to do for a placement. No doubt it’s because she should be revising and she’s distracting herself 🤣 but at least she’s thinking ahead.

Thanks crazy. She originally like Cardiff best. Then boyfriend appeared and Southampton was tops. She can get quite anxious to give her, her due . I KNOW was worried about homesickness. I also KNOW that she would have been fine if bf not on scene , she comes back to visit him not us ..we live two miles from his flat. They are inseparable.
There have been issues at Cardiff. She had a horrible time with her vocal tutor ...who was grieving but still said some things to her beyond the realms of criticism. Accommodation was wrong and far out etc etc.

She always loved Southampton and was devastated on results day. But even with grades in hand (ACC) I'm not sure she'll be accepted. Funnily enough she likes the Education degree there as there is a chance to do a bit of Psychology. It ties in with wanting to learn about autism etc/ her special needs teaching career.

It doesn’t sound like a disaster then @OrangeCinnamonLatte . Hopefully she’ll get at least 2 or 3 offers out of those and she does sound like she knows what she wants. A bit of psychology would probably be useful for a career in SEN. And conversely, if she’s living much nearer bf she might even settle in better and get involved in uni life? as She’ll be able to see him more regularly and it won’t necessarily mean whole weekends away?

OrangeCinnamonLatte · 18/05/2023 13:02

Fingers crossed @crazycrofter 🤞! DH of opinion she needs to revisit feminist theory too lol.

What an enlightened comment from DH @OrangeCinnamonLatte . Best of luck to her!

Piggywaspushed · 18/05/2023 17:30

I think she will get accepted. One of the girls I taught last year had an offer of ABB for Lancaster for sociology and they took her on ACD. Education degrees are recruiting degrees.

Oblomov23 · 18/05/2023 17:40

Hope she gets in Orange.
That's so poor handmademitlove, has she got, their objection, in writing, that she could then escalate (twats)?
Dh and I are in Benidorm for my 50th. With my bad back I may hire a motor scooter.

@Oblomov23 her personal tutor has taken on the challenge! He said he would discuss with the new vice-chancellor so could get interesting 🙂 Current plan is to address their objections one by one until they have nothing left 🙄 might be sorted by the time she gets to finals 🤣😂

The 3 poolside cocktails pre-lunch is medicinal.

Thanks @Piggywaspushed that's encouraging.

Enjoy your break, @Oblomov23! And glad that the tutor is on the case, @handmademitlove.

I and both DC are currently in (on?) the Wirral for a windsurfing thing this weekend after an epic drive (roadworks, rush-hour). Unfortunately the forecast is for almost no wind. Planning on leaving DS to his own devices and going for a hike/nature walk with DD.

DS is now halfway through his GCSEs (he had 3 papers = 5.5 hours yesterday). DD had her job interview for the illustration gig and will hear next week. She also has applications in for half a dozen more normal holiday jobs, so fingers crossed.

NCTDN · 20/05/2023 12:25

@PhotoDad did you get sick because of the m56 closure? It's a nightmare this weekend.

NCTDN · 20/05/2023 12:26

Stuck not sick!

PhotoDad · 20/05/2023 19:16

@NCTDN Yes, that's right! So I had problems at both ends (Newcastle rush hour at the start).

I might post a couple of DD's pics from the nature reserve later, but this is what my DS gets up to. For competitions age 16+, youngsters move from regular windsurfing to "windfoiling" (which is now the Olympic discipline). The board rises up on a hydrofoil above a critical speed, which reduces resistance (and also control!!!) He turns 16 this summer so is learning the new skills in advance (we drove all this way for a group coaching session...)

NCTDN · 20/05/2023 19:35

That's dedication! You'll have practically driven past my house.
Warning to anyone considering north Wales or Chester from the north tomorrow- don't bother!

PhotoDad · 20/05/2023 20:47

I'm hoping that the journey northbound tomorrow evening will be easier, @NCTDN!

In the meantime, DD and I visited RSPB Burton Mere, which was lovely (both the place and her company, full of positive plans for next year). Here are a fledgling blackbird, an unusual shot of a wren, and an extreme crop of some boxing hares, first time we've seen any in all these years of nature walks!

I've never seen a Hare! This is the Hare moon month perhaps they are seen this time of year? Beautiful photos.

ExtremelyDetermined · 21/05/2023 11:58

Lovely photos. I have only seen hares a few times, last time was last summer, I went to take photos at a local lavender farm with DD, it was a bit cloudy and hardly anyone else there, a hare jumped out of a row of lavender bushes just in front of us. Didn't get a photo though, it was gone again very quickly.

EwwSprouts · 21/05/2023 18:02

We used to live in a village and you could often see hares from one of the back roads. in. There was a barn owl too who I swear used to like to race the cars down the lane.
No photos but had a lovely day today at a country fair. So many gorgeous dogs, horses and a hammock full of ferrets!

NCTDN · 21/05/2023 21:23

@PhotoDad amazing pics! Hope your journey back was better today.

PhotoDad · 21/05/2023 21:26

@NCTDN Plain sailing home, whew. Spent the morning with DD at Port Sunlight, which was a thousand times more impressive than I had imagined. And we both like Victorian art, so the Lady Lever gallery was a big hit.

Country fairs can be amazing! Should seek out a few local ones...

omnishambles · 21/05/2023 21:39

Haven't been around. DS struggling with exams. Have tried to say all the right things but he is very stressed and worried as he says he just doesn't understand the topics. Resits would ruin Work America plans which is all paid for. 😱
