Reasonable rent for adult son

I would like to get an idea of a reasonable rent to charge DS (24) when he moves back from London in the summer. He has asked to move back in to facilitate saving for a house . He has been gone for two years. He earns above average wages and has no debt other than a student loan. We are Southern based. He works from home 3 out of 5 days with £320 travel costs pm. He is an athlete and eats like a horse. I asked for £300-400 a month. He thought that too much. I paid £100 pm in the early eighties. Advice/ averages? My friends don't have dc at home.

@Ladybug14 the dishwasher is DHs domain but our DS is super tidy and will clean daily. He will rearrange the furniture too!

I will cook for him but if he eats fast food or training foods he will pay for that. He earns good money but needs to contribute or he will pee us both off. I am happy to have him home as long as he is saving. He is a sweet lad really just a bit money orientated. I don't have any friends with dc as they have either left home or are PhD students. Son left straight after graduation. I thought £500 was about right but obviously not😁

£148 a week at Portsmouth Uni - no food. And that’s meant to be one of the cheapest places.

Ask him for a share of the bills and food, if you do extras for him, a bit more. Saving for a home of his own will cost him a bomb in this day and age and he needs to be encouraged to save quite a bit, at the same time enjoying himself and not being mean when he goes out with friends.

Son is coming home next week.
@LBFseBrom lots of changes sincere I posted this eight months ago. He will pay £400 pm and will stay a year until he buys with his GF.
He will also buy food and do the house DYI as he is good at it. My DH isn't as good as him as my late brother trained the DS. He is looking forward to coming home.
