OrangeCinnamonLatte · 01/11/2022 07:14

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Be warned there might be lots of 'Uni Freshers' chat this time of year. My experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had

I'm clearing out of DD's room today (I'd been 'camping' there because of snoring, oops). DW and DS are at a Windsurfing Training Camp; he is in the regional squad, and they have ice and very little wind, but they train in all weathers. And DD should be home at tea-time if the trains work out and she doesn't miss her change!

Hope everyone feels better, and drive safely!

EspeciallyD · 11/12/2022 12:11

@ZittiEBuoni we found the Esme book on the library BorrowBox app.

@Heifer DD and I had a fun afternoon/evening in London yesterday, we went to a carol singing concert and then wandered up the West End to see the lights, it was packed with Moroccans celebrating their win in the World Cup, cars tooting, flags everywhere, fireworks, and the lights were stunning. Today is a quiet day, I have just finished writing my cards and need to venture out to the supermarket and postbox. Hope you feel better soon.

PhotoDad · 11/12/2022 16:40

DD is home, her train was only 10 minutes late on a 3.5 hour journey with a change. (A year ago her anxiety issues made her nervous about catching even local trains, so that is another big 'adulting' step for her.) After 13 weeks of only having access to a shower, she has disappeared to have a hot bath and might be some while. Pizza this evening. All is well; she's going to show us her coursework once the others are back and I'm really looking forward to that!

EwwSprouts · 11/12/2022 17:36

We waited for DS to be home to decorate so have spent a leisurely afternoon doing that with the Danny DeVito film Deck The Halls on in the background.

@Oblomov22 I hope you are on the mend.

EwwSprouts · 11/12/2022 17:38

@Heifer Hope you recover swiftly too!

Has everyone travelling today managed to get through okay?

boxcar · 11/12/2022 19:18

@Alsoplayspiccolo asked DD re temp of heating & water in Mason. Her response was that the radiators make a horrible noise if you turn them up beyond 2 (they go to 4) so occasionally she’s sat in the kitchen because it’s warmer. She said the water in her flat is generally scalding so turning down a couple of degrees would be good.

I am bothered about the amount of time the water won’t be run though. She doesn’t have exams so her next proper lecture isn’t until 30th January. I do wonder what they do to reduce the Legionnaires risk. Someone up thread mentioned about running taps. That’s certainly true in schools: our caretaker runs the ones that don’t usually get used during the holidays. Some schools had an issue during the first lockdown because they didn’t do it.

Heifer · 11/12/2022 19:18

@EspeciallyD that sounds like a brilliant day, my kind of day.

Thanks for the well wishes, I'm not really ill just wiped out from not sleeping and heavy chest. Have had another restful day today, didn't get to either bedrooms but have done 4 lots of washing instead. As the heating is one all day today thought I would make the most of it.

Any better today @Oblomov22 ?

@PhotoDad totally understand re the bath. It was definitely something DD misses so I ran her one when she was home last week. Reminds me I will buy some nice bath bombs for her. Thank goodness for online shoping as going into Lush always used to give me a headache!

Piggywaspushed · 11/12/2022 19:19

Back for Brum with DS in tow! Journey fine!

His room is sooo damp and is full of black mould. Apparently he has reported it.

Niche question : does anyone know how to upload a photo into docusign? There is a box to put my ID but I can't get anything to go in it!

Oblomov22 · 11/12/2022 19:26

Thanks for all the nice well wishes. No, I'm no better. Still can't keep water or diarolyte down for more than a few minutes. It's been 3 days like that. Went to A&E, seen very quickly. She couldn't take blood because veins so bad. She tried 4 times, including hand that swelled up like a half grape. Finally got it on 5th attempt. She put in Canula gave me nausea medication and a tube of liquids into vein. Sent on bloods, one came back negative within a few minutes. She said the others would be overnight. She said it was 6-8 hours general wait to see the Doctor. So I came home.

Ring GP tomorrow. What else can I do?

On another note DS had 2 roasts planned for today. 1st with next year’s house mates in the local & 2nd the Geography Christmas Social. He didn’t check out where tonight’s dinner is. He’s at a fantastic Gastropub in the marina, up the Meridian Tower with views over Swansea & the bay. I’m extremely jealous! He’s sipping his pint though - not cheap. Hope he’s got enough appetite to enjoy it!

boxcar · 11/12/2022 19:31

@Oblomov22 really hope you turn the corner soon after those meds. Sounds awful!

Comefromaway · 11/12/2022 19:33

Ds has been to Retford and back on a train today for an orchestra rehearsal. He has no lectures next week and many have gone home but he’s got a busy schedule of rehearsals, practice, piano lesson & arrangements.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 11/12/2022 19:51

Oh, Oblomov, poor you. I hope you get to the bottom of what’s going on and find some relief very soon.

boxcar, DD isn’t back until late January either, so no chance of her water being run.

DD arrived home last night. Her new BF brought her back so we got to meet him - he seems lovely.
It was strange but wonderful to wake up to a full house this morning, for the first time since August, with the added bonus of snow.
We went to choose and cut down our Christmas tree this afternoon - it was just like Narnia and we even pulled it back through the snow on a sledge. Then we watched the new Pinocchio on Netflix, in front of the log burner.
My babies are home!! 🥰

boxcar · 11/12/2022 19:56

@Alsoplayspiccolo That sounds bliss. 🥰

PaddingtonPaddington · 11/12/2022 20:01

DD home yesterday after a 12 hour round trip and it’s so lovely to have her back. Just been to a Christmas concert that she was asked to play locally in and I’m now feeling all festive.

279Nouveauxnoms · 11/12/2022 21:19

Lovely stories of your DC coming home. We still have a week to go.

@Oblomov22 hope you improve quickly Flowers

Monkey2001 · 12/12/2022 00:07

@Oblomov22 hope you can get sorted tomorrow, sounds awful. 💐

Delphigirl · 12/12/2022 00:30

So lovely to hear of all the chickies coming back to the nest. Still have a week (6 sleeps! For DS1 and dD1 doesn’t come home from her work in London until the 21st!!!
Mind you I’m not finished work until 21st (well, 23rd but I’ll be at home and effectively on call for that and pretty hopeful there will be no call).

@Oblomov22 im worried about you. That really doesn’t sound good. Any improvement this evening?

Delphigirl · 12/12/2022 00:31

ps I sat down to catch up on work at 9.30 am and finished 25 mins ago. 15 hours basically immobile. Can’t be good.

Benjispruce4 · 12/12/2022 06:47

Good to hear all your babies are coming home. It’s gone so quickly. DD’s job is going well and she’s looking forward to her boyfriend coming back this week from Leeds. DD1 working in London is home on 23rd now due to rail strikes on 24th. Will be weird as she’s only home for a few days this year as opposed to a whole month off when at uni.

Piggywaspushed · 12/12/2022 06:48

Oblomov , I don't know how easy it will be to get Odanestron but maybe phone your GP and ask. It's the only thing that helped me to stop feeling sick when I was really ill with Covid. Lots of MNers swear by it for nausea and vomiting.

Benjispruce4 · 12/12/2022 06:49

Get well soon @Oblomov22

crazycrofter · 12/12/2022 08:44

Hope you feel better soon @Oblomov22 , that sounds really nasty 😬

OublietteBravo · 12/12/2022 09:45

I’m glad DD drove back from Cornwall on Friday. She’s currently at her boyfriend’s house, but that’s only a few miles away. I wouldn’t want her driving 300 miles in the current weather. Especially as she’s in an unfamiliar car (hers was written off in a crash last week - BMW pulled out in front of her and she couldn’t stop in time - that’s 2 cars she’s written off this year).

Takeittotheboss · 12/12/2022 09:52

Haven't been on thread for a while. Glad to hear all finishing term happy. My DS on gap year still at home working before heading to Africa in New Year.
Has visited various friends at university, seems pot-luck for friendship groups and potential house sharers so well done to all of yours that have successfully managed that!
He's had a recent shock though as a very close schoolfriend has died of meningitis. It's knocked everyone for six and meant the Christmas spirit hasn't reached here yet. Funeral is this week. Had funeral of his step-gran last week, but she was 86 and it was expected. Someone the same age as him starting out on life is much harder to take.
