This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Be warned there might be lots of 'Uni Freshers' chat this time of year. My experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had

And here it is! Not sure about Yorkshire puddings with turkey? Also in another photo it looks like they’re drinking Baileys out of tea cups!

Looks good @KingscoteStaff we have yorkshires with all roasts (like a pub!)

Fiddlersgreen · 09/12/2022 21:44

We love a Yorkshire pud here and have it with all roasts!

@Oblomov22 i hope you are ok, that sounds very nasty?

DS comes home for Xmas next weekend, not heard much from him lately so hope that means all is ok.

Heifer · 09/12/2022 21:50

We have Yorkshires every Sunday with our roast whatever the meat :-)

Looks a decent meal bet they had fun cooking it all together.

Sorry to see you're I'll @Oblomov22 really hope you're ok now, there is a lot of D&V around at the moment so unless you've eaten a dodgy meal maybe it's that and will go quickly.

Anyone had proper snow today? Due tomorrow?

Delphigirl · 09/12/2022 21:56

Oblomov22 · 09/12/2022 19:44

Love sounds of meals, apple crumble etc.
I am very ill in bed. Have been sick 10+ times already, since 6am. This is very odd for me, never ill.

Oh @Oblomov22 how grim, I’m so sorry. Is anyone looking after you? Are you keeping any fluids down?

Delphigirl · 09/12/2022 21:57

That is not bad at all! I’m v impressed! Love the teacup Baileys too

ZittiEBuoni · 09/12/2022 23:45

Sorry, Oblomov, that sounds horrible. I'm another 'never ill' type so when you are you have that added unease. Hope you feel better soon.

Love the Yorkies and teacups of Baileys with Christmas dinner. I'm trying to remember exactly what we ate and drank at our student house but I can only remember boiling cheap red wine in a pan with some mixed spice thrown in.

OrangeCinnamonLatte · 10/12/2022 07:57

Hope you feel better soon @Oblomov22. @ZittiEBuoni that sounds such a positive direction 🤞
@KingscoteStaff good effort....those pigs look a bit pale for me though... perhaps someone is addicted to Yorkshires like my Dd lol.

Hope you’re on the mend today, Oblomov. Lots of nasties going around but d&v has to be the most unpleasant. Can you sip flat coke to perk you up?

That dinner looks fab, Kingscote! I’m always up for a Yorkie!
DD had friendsmas last weekend. No Yorkers, as far as I could see, but she was in charge of pigs in blankets and they looked great.

Thanks for the water temp info, comefromaway. I’ll be interested to read the email DD says they’ve been sent. Is it even possible to turn the water temperature down for bathrooms but not kitchens??

OrangeCinnamonLatte · 10/12/2022 15:59

I'm wondering about the bathroom next to Dd's room in our actual house now...it's barely been used since she went to Uni (and has also been kept in the cleanest state for years) .

I know when DS was in halls maintenance used to come round weekly to run the showers during the holidays if students were away. Something to do with legionaires

EwwSprouts · 10/12/2022 17:02

@KingscoteStaff Most impressed with four veg there. DS would be most upset if there was a space where a Yorkie should go!
@Oblomov22 I hope you are on the mend? A colleague has just come back from a week off with food poisoning. Apparently dodgy hummus can be vicious.

I picked DS up from the train station last night. First term seems to have gone okay. Definitely tired. Saw a lovely photo of him at the college's winter ball. Went and bought himself dinner jacket - trained him well was from Next Outlet. Out with friends to watch football already. No snow but his friend is going to crash here as very icy lanes.

Oblomov22 · 10/12/2022 17:38

Thanks all for the well wishes. I'm still being sick and can't keep even water down.

NCTDN · 10/12/2022 19:49

Ooh oblomov sounds really nasty. Hope you are being waited on hand and foot x

Alsoplayspiccolo · 10/12/2022 21:57

Oblomov22 · 10/12/2022 17:38

Thanks all for the well wishes. I'm still being sick and can't keep even water down.

That sounds awful and quite worrying.
When you say you can’t keep water down, can you try only a teaspoon every 15 minutes? That was the advice when the DCs were small. If you can flatten full fat coke and do the same, even better.

Really hope you're on the mend soon.

Monkey2001 · 10/12/2022 23:36

Sending best wishes for a speedy recovery to @Oblomov22 🤐

EspeciallyD · 10/12/2022 23:39

@OrangeCinnamonLatte I agree with running the hot tap once a week, we have to do it to all hot taps at work (we have them in labs as well as toilets/kitchen) because of Legionnaire's.

@Oblomov22 I hope things start to improve soon for you. Maybe sips of Dioralyte would be good, keep your electrolytes topped up.

@KingscoteStaff we have Yorkies with any roast including turkey but we only have a roast 3 or 4 x a year. DS won't eat any part of a toast dinner.

@handmademitlove my DS is also allowed to stay in halls due to disability and is planning to do so for exactly those reasons, he has put in a request this week. They said he could keep his current room if he wants to (it is a big, lovely room) but he wants to move from catered to self-catering to improve his independent living skills.

@ZittiEBuoni that all sounds good for DD. I listened to the audio memoir of Esme Young (Sewing Bee) about her life as a fashion designer recently and it was so interesting.

@boxcar we go to a Christmas tree farm too and DS always cuts our tree as it is one of the skills he uses for his course (and previously his BTEC studies) but we can't go till he is back on Friday and we are a bit nervous there won't be any good ones left as ours no longer permits tagging.

Had a long chat with DS this morning, he says he's really ready to come home now (I'm picking him up on Thursday after lectures). He needs to organise a 6 week work placement for next summer so has started planning for that (we are both a bit nervous about finding one and then the logistics of location and travel) and has contacted a driving school to get started with lessons in the new year.

Piggywaspushed · 11/12/2022 07:07

Hope you feel better today oblomov.

Why does everything have to be so complicated these days? DS has a guarantor form, and you can't just fill it in and send a photocopy, oh no. It's all pdf this, scan this, put this in this box... no clue what I'm doing!

They also expect them to be there in the first week to do inventories and meter readings it seems, even though that's early July!

PhotoDad · 11/12/2022 07:41

Poor @Oblomov22! Hope you feel better soon.

EspeciallyD · 11/12/2022 09:30

I scan everything with my phone now @Piggywaspushed then email directly from there. It can all be a bit of a faff though.

DS has sent me lovely snowy photos this morning.

Hope you are feeling a bit better this morning @Oblomov22

Piggywaspushed · 11/12/2022 09:39

It's all the 'save this as a pdf , then scan this and then put it in this exact box' . To be honest my phone screen is not big enough and my storage is very limited!

When you do your standing orders they want a screenshot too!

My phone doesn't like scanning - it tries to take a photo instead.

Piggywaspushed · 11/12/2022 09:41

Just got a post removed from WIWIKAU. Apparently you are not even allowed to mention a 'rival' facebook parents' support group! I wasn't even suggesting someone join it , I just mentioned to a dad that we had conversed about a topic on it. His post, which also mentioned it was not removed.

Surely, a good use of WIWIKAU would be to point parents to other helpful sites??

ZittiEBuoni · 11/12/2022 09:59

We love Sewing Bee EspeciallyD, thanks for recommending Esme's memoir - sounds like something we could listen to together on these cold evenings.

Snow here! DD2 is pinning her hopes on mock cancellations tomorrow but I think she might be disappointed...

Going to be waiting for news that Oblomov is on the mend today, fingers and toes are crossed.

Piggywaspushed · 11/12/2022 10:09

Got to drive to Birmingham to get DS today. What's weather like there?

Heifer · 11/12/2022 10:28

Sending get her well vibes and hugs to @Oblomov22.

DD still not completed her forms yet so we haven't received the guarantor info yet. She had a late one last night, went clubbing and got back to her room at 4.45! At least she can sleep in all today.

Good luck to anyone picking up DD/DS today hoping the roads are ok for you all.

My plan for today was to tidy our bedroom and get DDs ready for her coming home later in the week. Got some new Christmas bedding, and some decs and lights to put up. I feel like I'm drowning in micas yet again. Got another chesty cough and not feeling great at all. I didn't totally get rid of the last one...

Any one got anything fun happening this weekend?
