Carrying on from the 2019/20 Uni students thread let’s talk about what it’s like to have our fresh graduates home, for some of us invading our nice empty nest, for all of us creating a new household dynamic…….

Yes I totally agree @Benjispruce4 . I've said it before and I'll say it again - I really don't think anyone should be able to have more than a given (five seems plenty) number of buy-to-lets. It is exploitative.

LouisCatorze · 03/08/2022 19:21

This might be useful for young people contemplating cheap(ish) London neighbourhoods (advance warning that it's a DM article).

Notagardener · 03/08/2022 19:25

I also read people buying property in central London and renting out short term as Airbnb.

FayeGovan · 03/08/2022 20:41

East India Buildings, Saltwell St, London E14 .....can anyone tell me about here?

LouisCatorze · 03/08/2022 21:03

It's East London. Lots of transport links nearby. Looks looks like mainly social housing locally (CTM neighbourhood) but it's a regenerated area so up and coming. Apparently it takes 13 minutes on the Elizabeth Line. And the 15 Bus goes from Poplar to Charing Cross Station (and from there it's only a short walk down to Westminster) and takes about 40 minutes.

LouisCatorze · 03/08/2022 21:05

And not far from Canary Wharf or Greenwich (and the O2) for local going out

LouisCatorze · 03/08/2022 21:17

@FayeGovan is he used to living in a city or is he more of a country boy? At least he has a couple of months of lightish evening months in hand to get used to a new area.

The playground opposite could be really quiet or a 'hangout' for youths?

But how exciting having all those tall Canary Wharf buildings so within eyeshot! Quite a magical view in a way.

FayeGovan · 03/08/2022 21:21

City boy really. I agree about the playground opposite...thanks for looking at it for me. I guess it doesn't have to be forever, think the minimum stay is 6 months.
Again, thank you.

FayeGovan · 03/08/2022 21:25

Forgot to ask, whats a CTM neighbourhood?

LouisCatorze · 03/08/2022 21:30

@FayeGovan good luck to him. An interesting area to explore for sure (not far from the Emirates cable car sky ride across the Thames either!). And on the Elizabeth Line so quick travel times across London into Essex one way and Reading and Heathrow the other way.

LouisCatorze · 03/08/2022 21:31

Call the Midwife is set in Poplar of yesteryear!

FayeGovan · 03/08/2022 21:35

I love CTM 😁

Thanks again

Morning. So DD has gone to get train to London for first day at work. Did she listen to her mother and get everything ready the night before to avoid morning stress and panic? I think we all know the answer to that. 😉

DS is also having a huge issue finding somewhere , he starts end Sept and is up North . He’s going to be in a tent at this rate.

issue is not so much greedy landlords more the Govt have changed rules for landlords on renting so lots have sold up and therefore less available. So demand is very high & people offering more as they need somewhere.

another poorly thought though policy that has not decreased house prices & only served to drive up rental prices.

RampantIvy · 04/08/2022 07:25

DD has been looking for somewhere to rent with a couple of friends in her university city and is struggling due to the shortage of properties on the rental market.

It's no wonder our young adults are finding it difficult to leave home.

bigTillyMint · 04/08/2022 07:33

@Benjispruce4, welcome to the world of adult children still at home when starting a new job! DD is less stressy now after 9 months. And she only goes in one day a week on a straight 20min train!

Gosh, finding a flatshare sounds awful now. I stayed with a friend when I first came to London and found a houseshare in Loot (remember that?) - was the first one I looked at, all new young professionals £50 a week and it turned out to be an extension of being at uni as we were very social whilst still getting up for work!

Benjispruce4 · 04/08/2022 07:41

Sounds great @bigTillyMint and I think that’s what DD and mates are hoping for, the uni experience but with money. I can’t bear that she’ll be paying someone else’s mortgage off with extortionate rent but DH is more chill and says to take a short term view that it’s something for her to experience now and see what happens. He is the calm in this marriage thank goodness.

icanbewhatiwant · 04/08/2022 08:32

@bigTillyMint I remember loot. Then there were the free ad. papers, they were a different colour each day. Our dc's would find it weird searching for jobs/property etc. in a newspaper.

VanCleefArpels · 04/08/2022 09:01

@Benjispruce4 i can only imagine your blood pressure!!

on renting yes it’s very difficult but with rising interest rates and inflation it’s not a great time to consider buying either even if it was within financial reach (which it’s not in the SE at least). That’s why we will have them at home for the foreseeable I reckon 😐

Can i borrow your dh @Benjispruce4 🤦‍♀️
Im beyond worried and fretting about ds's accommodation. We've had words and dh told me basically to let ds get on with it as he doesn't want anyone interfering. But dh is worried too.

Anyway thank you all for letting me join in here, seems all our "kids" are in similar boats....

Benjispruce4 · 04/08/2022 10:20

Ha ha @FayeGovan I honestly feel quite tense. I also have DD2 awaiting A level results and no idea how that will go .

FayeGovan · 04/08/2022 10:28

Hopefully it will go well🤞
I've got ds2 trying to decide on his dissertation topic, needs done very soon and there's just nothing grabbing him..

bigTillyMint · 04/08/2022 10:37

Sending calming vibes to you both! And anyone else needing them. My DH is usually the calmer one too, but I’m much less likely to worry now they are older 😃

FayeGovan · 04/08/2022 10:41

I dont know why i worry so much

Benjispruce4 · 04/08/2022 11:25

I’ve just been out with the dog for a good old plod and feel less tense. Always works!
I’m making a massive generalisation here but we’ve talked before on these threads about being our DC’s sponge. We take it all on and feel their anguish with them. Often they’ve moved on after using us as a stress doll and we’re left with the worry.
DD got a seat on a very busy commuter train and had time for a Starbucks before going to the office. I hope she enjoys her first day. The company sounds very work hard/ play hard. Happy hour on Fridays?🤔She'll love that…. so long as she’s not wfh 🤣
