5 year old going to bed at 9pm. Is this normal?

One of the things me and my ex disagreed about was bedtime. We both worked and our son basically had bath at about 7.30 and went to bed sometime between 8.30 and 9.
I thought we should try to get him to bed earlier so we could have a life in the evening but this never happened.

Anyway - he still has a similar routine and to be fair he is not usually tired during day and does wake up quite early. It does however impact on my ex because she has little time left in the evening.

I know she works so she wants to spend time with him after school and work. It just seems that 9 pm is late. I was going to bed at that time when I was 11.

Is this normal? What time do other children go to bed?

My DD is 5 and she goes to bed about 9pm. I would like her to go to sleep earlier but she just isn't tired. You could try encouraging quiet time, playing/reading in his room from 8pm, lights out at 9pm?

clemettethedropout · 26/06/2010 22:49

DD is 5 and goes to bed at 7.

In winter DS2 goes is often spark out by 7.30 but atm it's between 8 and 9.

DS is 6 and he is in the bath before 7 and his light goes off somewhere between 7 & 7.45 usually 25 minutes after he gets into bed.

Do they live over the road from me? I was in bed before the 5 year old over the road last night - he was still in the front garden at 10.30pm watering plants!

I try to get DS1 into bed by 8pm as he gets grouchy the next day, but sometimes DS1 and DS2 are up messing around until much later.

I think some children need more sleep than others - if they are both happy and your son is not overtired then don't see the problem tbh.

Ds is just turned 6 and goes to bed at 7pm at the weekends and 7.30pm during the week (we aren't home much before 6.30pm during the week so 7pm is too early to get tea, do homework, bath etc). 9pm is late but some of ds's classmates seem to have this bedtime too. Having said that they aren't up before 8am.

mel1981 · 26/06/2010 22:57

DS1 is 6 and usually in bed between 7- 7.30 sometimes later for special occasions, but my 3 are all early risers so are tired by then.
My opinion 9 is too late for every night but everyones different. Maybe just bringing it foward gradually ie 15- 30 mins and see how that works out?

mine all go to bed by 7.30

but, my friend has a 5yr old and a 2.5 yr old and they are generally up until 9 or 10

they just don't sleep much and are absolultey fine on it. she's tried numerous times to get bedtime forward but they just don't go to sleep, so she has stuck with it.
like your son neither of them seem to suffer from it during the day, so it must be ok for them i think

Mine is 5-nearly-six and is going about 9pm at the moment. It seemed to happen very suddenly -- one day he went about 7-7.30 the next he was staying up til 9 and there it stayed. But it's definitely that he just didn't seem to need the sleep any more, he's acting no more tired than normal, waking up at normal time in the morning, etc. I guess he's just an early developer in this area. Bummer!

I think they vary massively. Lots of friends with same age DCs say they go about 6.30-7pm but then I know there are others like mine.

I just tend to go downstairs and let him potter by himself until he's ready to sleep. If the tv isn't on and I'm not interacting with him then I figure there's nothing 'keeping him up'.

It is a bit of a bummer though, I can't properly watch sweary telly and drink booze relax until he's finally gone to sleep.

my DD is 4.5yo and goes to bed generally between 8-9 pm and has done for a while now. it depends on the child tbh

geraldinetheluckygoat · 26/06/2010 23:20

my five year old and three year old go between half six if very tired or annoying and half seven.

funnysinthegarden · 26/06/2010 23:29

yes, anywhere between 6.30 if very annoying and 8pm if OK. BUT once they are in bed and have instructions to only come down in a dire emergency, generally they fall to sleep on their own.

DH & I always get some sort of an evening, even if it means eating dinner at 9pm
