Chicken-pox - contagious period

Just heard my neice has got chicken-pox - she's 3 yrs old. Sis and family are having a house-warming party next weekend, nothing major, just a BBQ if the weather's good. I have a 4 months old DS and really don't want to him to have the pox just yet. I know - best to have it young, but 4 months seems a bit little. So now I'm thinking we won't go next weekend. WWYD? Will my neice still be contagious in a week's time? I don't know exactly when she started with it, but they had it diagnosed today...

I wouldn't have thought so. Chickenpox stops being contagious once the spots have crusted over which is usually about 5 days after the first spot appears (7 days at the outside). If she's been diagnosed today she could well be a day or two into it already. She shouldn't be infectious by then.

they are contagious from 1-2 days before the spots appear until they go crusty which is normally 5-7 days after they first start to appear.
