Camping for the first time with our 8 month old... help! what to take?

Hi everyone!

we are off camping next weekend with our baby.
We've done lots of wild camping before she was born, but have never been with a baby before and my mind has gone blank on what we should take along!

We are camping in scotland so the weather could be anything!

So far we have..

A family tent.
A nomad travel cot.
baby waterproofs.

eh thats' it!

She's not keen on eating from jars at all these days and prefers finger foods.

She is still on 4 bottles a day. We have 7 bottles in total and will be going for 2.5 days.

I'm not sure what she should be sleeping in other than the cot?

suggestions greatly appreciated!!

Well done you! We are contemplating the whole camping experience too so will watch this thread with interest.
As someone who lives in the country you are camping in, my suggestion would be midge repellent (although depends on where in Scotland you are visiting).

Friends of ours have just returned from a camping try with their little one and she came back with 2 observations:

  1. Don't expect everything to be sterile and clean - enjoy a little bit of dirt (ahem )
  2. Babies waken very early in tents - when the sun is up, so are they!

There was another thread very recently on here about the same thing so perhaps see if you can find that one?

Good luck. Hope you have a wonderful time.

'camping trip' not 'camping try'

hi

I live in Scotland too! we are only camping in Fife this time so I hope we will be fine for the dreaded midgies though I will be taking some repellent just in case!

I am a bit worried about the early waking/ not sleeping at all!

We have ventured away from everything being sterile, over the last couple of months, so I guess we can just boil bottles in a pan or something.

I go camping every single weekend and we first brought younger DS camping when he was just 2 days old. We are in a trailer mind you, not a tent - but I find the kids sleep better when camping (nice fresh air knocks them right out). As for things being steril - if you have a portable BBQ / Stove top or if you bring a big pot you can boil some water on an open fire and then wash and sterilize the bottles in the boiled water.

I am currently 38 weeks preggo and we are planning on camping as soon as baby is born. It's a fantastic experience. As for the bugs, you can use Eucalyptus oil on your kids, it's 100% natural and not harmful and it keeps the bugs away. I use when I'm preggo because it's not safe to use bug spray.

Enjoy your trip!!!

We are going in a couple of weeks with dd1 (aged 3.5) and dd2 (aged 12months). DD2 will sleep in travel cot in a normal baby sleeping bag, wearing a combo of vest/babygrow/fleecy babygro depending on the temperature. I will also take a blanket just in case it turns arctic!

Have fun!
