Hi I have a DS aged 4 who goes to the toilet using one of those little steps. He still wees sitting on the loo at the moment. Was just interested to know how & when you teach your ds's to wee standing up? Any tips much appreciated. Also he doesnt know when I ask if he needs a wee or a poo & usually does a bit of both so how can I work this?

I didn't. They saw their dad doing it, and saw other boys at school/out and about using urinals. I did wonder if I shirked responsibility by not bothering to teach them, but they don't seem to have missed out. Being lazy little tykes they tend to sit down at home (because they know that if they splash I'll make them clean it up) and stand up when they have to. I appreciate that I might get flamed for not making them stand up and wee all over my bathroom because in the past MN consensus has been that men who don't stand are somehow girly and less macho than those that do, but frankly how they decide to relieve themselves is their own business.

My 2 yr old mindee is toilet training atm and stands up to go (mop and bucket permanently in the bathroom now).

I think that practicing his aim would prob be a good idea so that if he needs to use a urinal, he wont miss and feel embarrassed, or get feet/trousers wet.

ds has peed standing up since his willy could reach over the rim of the toilet (around the age of 2.5-3years). It is easier than the faff we used to have of having to remove the bottom half of his clothing (plus shoes) every time he needed to pee when he sat down.

ds1 about 6
ds2 straight away from potty training as he saw ds1 doing it so almost 3 he has a pretty good aim but is easily distracted!

Ok so is this easier if its dads job? do you hold it for them first then let them have a go? or just let them get on with it & stand by with the mop?

We got s1's favourite teddy and a fruitshoot bottle. I held teddy standing on the step with the bottle inbetween his legs and gave the bottle a squeeze to give ds1 the idea. Then gave teddy a few smarties.
Ds1 is coming up 3

My ds1 started when he potty trained at 3. He came home from nursery and did a standup wee at the toilet and I cracked up, it looked so funny. He said one of the other boys at nursery taught him, so its obviously peer pressure. Its quite useful if we are out and there is no loo nearby, as he can just take himself off to a quiet place and wee rather than me having to balance ds2 and hold him while he squats somewhere.

He's got quite a good aim actually, I normally ask him to try to hit something which also encourages him to go more often as he finds it fun. You can get those floating ball things can't you that you can put down the loo for them to wee on. Not sure where you buy them from though.

I had wondered about this and when DS1 started potty training at 3.1, he sat down all the time. About 6 months later, he suddenly started standing up as (I think) he saw his friends do it at nursery - and he has never made a mess

Had heard tales of having to teach them using ping pong balls - but this was not required!

Ds I tried to teach him to sit on the potty but he announced daddy doesn't and stood up and peed everywhere getting about a quarter in the potty so about 2.6. His aim still leaves a lot to be desired .

May try the floating ball thing ds made me pee with laughter I was heavily pg busting for a pee so hoping in the bathroom while dp had a pee when ds run in pushed me outta the way and peed in the toilet at the same time as dp . I was gobsmacked at first then PMSL literally and asked dp if that was a good idea and he said well he does it at the urinal in public toilets .

DS has always insisted on going sitting down. It's only in the last few months that he's started going standing up - he's 8 .
