First Beds vs Single Beds

Our DS is currently 13 months, but we are starting to think about his next bed. His current cot looks like it will hold till 18 months at least, but not sure if it will make 2 years.

Is it better to move from a cot into a "first bed" or into a proper single? (I notice that you can also get 2'4 singles also).

The trouble with buying a first bed is that you also have to buy special bedding to fit that bed. I remember being given this advice in a baby shop, and so bought a proper single.

We had a small cot, so moved DD's into a toddler bed at about 18 months. It worked well for us because as DD1 outgrew the toddler bed, DD2 was ready to move into it.

Toddler beds are smaller and lower and usually have a rail to help stop them falling out. But I wouldn't spend a fortune. Ours was about £70, but you also need a matress and they will only be in it about 2 years so I would say if you don't have another child to pass it on to, it's probably not worth the expense. In that case you would be better off getting a single and a side rail if you are worried about falling out.

Single. I think a toddler bed is a false economy. Both of mine have gone into a proper bed before 2 years old and been absolutely fine. And fwiw, neither has ever fallen out of bed. Climbed out, certainly, but never fallen

Agree with nigglewiggle. They are good but our DD is now ready for a full single at 4 do only hoy 2 years out of it. Just get a full single but a low one, most places do them for kids.
