What's up with Pampers? - elastic breaking

What's happened to Pampers?
Every nappy I have used in the last 2 weeks from 3 separate packs has had dodgy elastic. It keeps snapping while my son is wearing the nappy and then the contents leak out - yuck...
They have recently started putting cardboard in the packs saying 'this pack contains trial nappies instead of the ones you wanted to buy' but I assumed that was a marketing gimic to explain why there were less in the pack.
Are Pamper going bust? Are they using a cheaper elastic and making shoddy nappies now?
Any other recommended brands? My son has ezcema so I need a soft nappy (otherwise he scratches his bum till it bleeds where the nappy rubs)but I am happy to swap from Pampers now.

they are rubbish, aren*t they...
I switched to Sainsburys eco ones now. was happy with pampers before but they just dont work for us any more.

TurtleAnn · 19/05/2010 13:50

I'm trying Huggies little walkers this afternoon to see what they are like. They seem soft enough.
Tesco just weren't soft enough and my son kept scratching his bum sides where the nappy rubbed.

I am annoyed at Pampers though, I was loyal to Active Fit and bought 4+ for day and 5 for night and they worked fabulously until 2 weeks ago, since we got on to the 'new' packets with the cardboard warning.

i got SO cross about that when i bought 3 packs of 50ish in boots 3 for 2 to find out they are different!
NOT great for poop leaks!

also ds suddenly needed to go up a size as they were rubbing on the inside of his legs! (the rest of him hasn't grown though!)

i swapped them for a bigger size in boots but am not impressed with the changes.

only reason i haven't swapped is huggies were awful when we first had ds and sainsburys often don't have much choice in their range.

I'm impressed with little walkers from huggies so far.
We'll see how they do overnight though, I think they wont be absorbent enough. So I will probably end up buying little walkers for daytime and another brand search for a night time nappy!

I've used pampers for the last 2 years, but got so fed up with the leaking nappies the last 8 months that I've switched...to Aldi's own, I love them - NO leakages, just gutted I didn't try them earlier!

JollyBear · 20/05/2010 12:52

Complain! I filled in a complaint form on the pampers website after the fastening tab broke off in my hand twice. They sent me a prepaid envelope for sending the faulty nappy back, plus a voucher for £6.

TurtleAnn · 20/05/2010 19:59

It's not just me - yipee, I no longer feel like a complainer
Pampers are on Watchdog tonight being quizzed by Anne Robinson.

Yuk Jolly Bear, they wanted the dirty nappy back - ewwwww

OP posts:
JollyBear · 20/05/2010 20:11

Oh it wasn't dirty! The elastic band broke as I was putting it on. Receiving a soiled nappy through the post would be most unpleasant.

SingleMum01 · 20/05/2010 20:20

watchdog were just doing a feature on it

TurtleAnn · 20/05/2010 20:51

OMG Just watched Watchdog. My son's excema also got worse when we started getting the 'new' nappies, we just assumed it was a change in the weather and the NHS advised us to stop using Waitrose Bottom Butter and use Vaseline until it had cleared, which it never really has.

I am sending my Pampers back and demanding a refund and switching to Huggies.

Plus, how thick are Pampers - daft woman on Watchdog - kids only pee up front - Yes but loose stools cause an awful lot of dampness up the rear and it doesn't have to be diarhea stools can just be loose for a few days.

we've not had any problems with the new pampers, but the sainsburys eco ones were atrocious - they leaked every single time! tbh we couldn't see much difference between old and new pampers, apart from new being a little smaller.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 20/05/2010 20:56

I've always used Huggies myself- I prefer the fit and they seem to absorb more than Pampers. I try and make sure that I keep my son in the lowest size possible for as long as possible as it helps to prevent leaks. You also get a few more nappies for your money if you stay with the smaller ones!

A friend of mine reckons that Pampers are better for little girls and Huggies are better suited to boys, must be down to the anatomy?

whomovedmychocolate · 20/05/2010 20:58

Yes Pampers clearly haven't been tested on breastfed older babies. DS can produce enough poo to fill a teacup!

mrsflux · 21/05/2010 14:14

whomovedmychocolate - doesn't need to be BF for that to happen!

Sonilaa · 21/05/2010 17:38

I just watched the program on the Iplayer... I liked the old design because it could "soak up" ebf babys poo before it shot up to the ears. the newborn nappies only lasted me 3 months as dd is quite big. I use different nappies now, they still leak, but at least its not as expensive

whomovedmychocolate · 21/05/2010 21:15

I emailed them today - they are sending me a voucher

So, to be clear, the nappies are not good, yet they still think I'm thick enough to buy more?

HelenMumsnet · 25/05/2010 10:05

Hello. We've just had a call from Pampers and they've asked us to post this statement:

"We are sorry for any confusion caused with the new Pampers Active Fit with Dry Max and any problems you?ve experienced. We take your concerns very seriously.

"As you can appreciate we can't respond directly on forums without the permission of the Forum owner, so please call us on 0800 328 328 1 (UK) or 1800535124 (Ireland), so we can help you personally.

"Thank you for raising your concerns; they are very important to us, and we look forward to your call to help you in any way we can.

Yours sincerely, the Pampers Team"

Merrylegs · 25/05/2010 10:12

Why don't you give them permission then, Helen?

HelenMumsnet · 25/05/2010 12:22

Hi Merrylegs. We've found (from our bulging Report this Post inbox!) that most MNers don't like advertisers/retailers barging onto Talk threads - even ones where their products are being discussed.

So we tend to advise companies in this situation to give us a statement which we can post up for them.

purpleflower123 · 25/05/2010 12:29

I'm not impressed at all with the new nappies. I thought it was because I'd gone up a size but they are terrible. My 19 month old DD did 1 wee in it and it leaked out of the sides on to my leg, I've also had tabs breaking.

When this pack is gone I'll definitely be changing brands

lizziemun · 25/05/2010 14:06

Me too purpleplower123.

Pampers have enough of my money over the last few months with 2 in nappies.

Merrylegs · 25/05/2010 14:20

Ah. Thanks. I see.

LOL at Pampers' 'confusion' apology though!

aquavit · 25/05/2010 14:25

Yup, I too hate the new Pampers. Do the huggies do OK overnight?

(not that we need much absorbency at the moment since dd is sweating so much in the heat that her nappy is barely wet in the morning )

TurtleAnn · 26/05/2010 13:46

Sad news on the Huggies front I'm afraid.
The nursery 'spoke' to me this morning about the leaky new nappies I was using, so Little Walkers are no good, or at least I will have to try a larger size!
And super dry overnights huggies that i was using have given my boy a bum rash like the new pampers - s they're no good.
I'm at a loss, I feel like starting the UK version of the US facebook campaign to 'bring back the old pampers active fit'.

TurtleAnn - I've found the Nature Babycare range to be really good. Very slightly bulkier than some others, but definitely hold everything in (and supposed to be better for the environment, although I haven't investigated their claims). I stopped using them and went to Pampers cos although they're not any more expensive usually, Pampers were always on offer/I had vouchers. However, after today's poo explosion (went through 4 layers of clothes up to shoulders!) and all the comments on here, I won't be using Pampers again...although like whomovedmychocolate they answered my complaint with some vouchers! TBH, I'm thinking of switching to reusables...
