Learning German in Berkshire/Reading

Hiya,

DH is half swiss german and has passable german and MIL has spoken only Schweizerdeutsch to our son from birth (sees him 1/2 x a week and he is now 2.4

We are moving about an hour away so he will see her less often and DH doesn't feel able to pick up the Schweizerdeutch gauntlet!

I don't speak any at all so there are two things I'm looking for, one is suggestions on a good way for me to learn and the other (and most important) is a kids language club, german school etc - I've looked at the ones n richmond and guildford but they are mainly on saturdays and I'd quite like one during the week for preschoolers as the weekend is when we want to try and take the boys to their grandparents.

Are there any german speaking mums in Berkshire who can advise?

Try finding a native German speaking babysitter who can look after him in German for a couple of hours a week. Ideally try to find a family with school age children and a German Au Pair. You may well find you can then employ the Au Pair for a couple of hours during the day when she/he is not working for their family IYSWIM. I managed this for a short time with DS (school age) and then subsequently managed to find a post grad student (native German speaker) from a local university to come in for an hour a week.

Hello

I am just about to move back to Berkshire after living in Switzerland for 4 years. My kids both speak Swiss German which I want to continue. Would be interested to chat to you if you contact me by Email, maybe we could put our heads together?

Hi,

We have moved back to Berkshire after living 12 Years in Germany and mainly Austria. Our children are 11 (girl) & 15 (boy) and both speak Austro-German fluently. If there are parents with Children who want to continue speaking German, so not to lose it and you live near Newbury then perhaps the children can meet up. Or as per other posts certainly our son can baby sit and use his German.
