Hi, My daughter is 5 is August and weighs about 3stone 6pounds and she is about 3 and half foot. The school nurse phoned me to tell me my daughter is short and overweight and asked what Im going to do about it!! It really upset me because to look at her she dosnt look over weight at all. Yes she has a bit of a belly on her but from been about 1 and half she always has. Me and dad are both short and our weight is fine. As I said to the nurse she has a diet of fresh meats, fruit and veg and what ever she eats at school at lunch time. She gets plenty of exercise...... walks to school and back monday - friday and thats a 20min walk and after school when the weather is fine shes always out playing on the trampoline! Yes she eats sweets and ice creams but not on a daily basis just every now and again. Any advise would be good. Thanks x

This makes me so , sweeping statements but no practical assistance, arrggh.Anyway...

Do you have your DDs 'red book' that has her health stuff in...if you do have a look at growth charts at the back. Find the centile that your DD is on for height, then the same for weight..what's the gap?

My DD has always been 'underweight' and 'too short'...she eats like a horse but is also very active but I have vivid memories of leaving her 8mnth check in tears because I felt I had been accused of starving my baby .

So, when you've got your difference between height and weight centile, if this is more that 10 either way I was told should be monitored.

So, then ring school nurse back (will be easier to speak if you ring her) and find out when they plan to monitor, how they plan to assist you and when you can meet them to get some further advice. She should not have rung with the blanket message that your DD should lose weight without some further advice.

Hope this helps a bit,but if you want to know more would suggest BBC health website, loads of stuff on there.

My DS is in bed now but will try to weigh and measure him tomorrow...will probably find he's 'overweight' too

DD is 110cm and weighs just under 3 stone.

oh this annoys me so much, there have been a few cases like this in the news recently

i got flamed on here a whle back for saying i was going to refuse all school health checks... well thigns like this are exactly why I have refused them!
i have NO idea what my 5 yr olds height or weight are, but i can seee that he is happy, healthy, not overweight, not too skinny, developing perfectly

if it were me i would just ignore it

If those measurements you've given are accurate then yes she is overweight. Her height and weight are disproportionate.

However the nurse hasn't been very helpful - she should be offering advice not just asking what you are going to do about it.

Check her portion sizes (most people overestimate how much food a 4-5 year old needs) and watch out for foods such as biscuits, crisps, sweets, chocolate and ice creams. Make sure she isn't drinking loads of milk or fruit juice which adds extra calories.

Mine was weighed at the weekend. 16 kilos and 110cm tall.

Sorry - I am rubbish at converting to different measurements.

The thing is we are all different shapes and sizes. You seem to be giving your daughter a varied healthly diet with treats ( all in moderation) and exercise.
Ask this nurse what she wants you to do about it - cos' IF she is overweight then the nurse should advise.

CatJosephine · 10/05/2010 22:15

130 cm tall and I will weigh him tomorrow.

Littlefish · 10/05/2010 22:23

dd is 114cm tall and 3st. I think this puts her on the 49th centile.
