my 3 y old asks a lot at the moment. he wants to know where the babies come out of the tummy and knows that it is not through the belly button

he is quite convinced that he came out of daddy*s willy and his baby sister came out of my bottom.

how do I get the facts right and still age appropriate?

I was very matter of fact and answered questions accurately up to the point the questions ran out. So if he asks where the baby comes out - tell him there's a sort of tube/tunnel between where the baby grows and the outside, and the baby comes down this and out of a hole between the mummy's legs. I did this with my DS1, and to be fair, he did get a bit obsessed with it for a short while - asked to see my hole, tried to look up my skirt a few times, but that passed. The general advice is to think about your child's level of comprehension, watch out for saying things that might be misinterpreted, and don't go into more detail than there question is asking for.

A good picture book for this age group is Mummy Laid and Egg by Babette Cole

Another helpful book is Questions Children Ask - and How To Answer them, by Miriam Stoppard
