When should I take DS to the dentist?

He's 21mo. Doesn't have his back molars yet but was wondering when others started trips to the dentist?
Obviously not expecting him to need any treatment just yet!

i took DS at around this age

dentist counted his teeth and checked them over

DS thought it was very exciting

i think dd's first visit was around age 4, but someone with more professional knowledge may be around soon to advise.

Fwiw, I take her to a special pediatric dentist, and have never had a problem with her not wanting to go.

we had a letter from the hv telling us to get them registered with a dentist coming up to age 2. Plenty of 2yos will not open their mouths for a dentist...but anyway...

I took mine with me from when they were babies/toddlers (sat them in the pushchair so they could watch) and the dentist used to look in their mouths. As they got older they would go for a 'ride on the chair' and have the teeth recorded by the dentist. Now, at age 5 and 8, they fight over who is going to go first when we have out 6 monthly check ups .

DomesticGoddessInTraining · 28/04/2010 21:07

DS had his first appointment at around 18 months. He was quite bemused by the whole thing. I plan just to keep taking him when I go for my 6 monthly checkups.

I was terrified of the dentist and missed a decade of one or two appointments over the years so I'm keen for him to get used to going as early as possible!

Well I stuck my finger in his mouth last week to check for those back molars- big mistake! Not sure I should inflict him on a dentist...
I will phone my dentist and see what they say about bringing him in.
Thanks everyone!

My Ds is 23MO old now and has been going to the dentist for about a year. It's only a quick check up but I think it's good for him to get used to it.

He quite likes it now!!

I've been slack, haven't I?

Our dentist said dont need to see them till 3. I was bit surprised at it being that late.

Lindax · 28/04/2010 21:53

took ds with me for 6 month check-ups from around 18mths, he kept mouth firmly shut for first two. Opened mouth to dentist standing about 6 feet away for next two, eventually got used to it and got into chair around 3.5/4yrs.

Dont think dentist needs to see them so young, but, helps get them used to the place.

sparkleshine · 29/04/2010 08:58

My future SIL is a dental nurse and im sure they dont have to go til around 2yrs.

Ive got an appt next wk and will take my DS who is 4mths with me, then again to my 6mthly check ups when i go, just to get him used to the place and dentist etc.

My DP never goes unless he needs to and i dont want my DS doing the same thing.

heather1980 · 29/04/2010 09:03

dd and ds were both registered at 12 months, but the dentist checks them over at my appointments rather than making one just for them.
he just counts teeth at that age anyway

Tee2072 · 29/04/2010 09:11

DS just had his first appointment this past Tuesday. He's 10 months. He came with me for my check up and will continue to do so.

3billygoatsgruff · 29/04/2010 09:20

DS had his first check up at about 6 months even tho he had no teeth!! Dentist said he may as well have a look whilst I was having a check up. I asked him whether I needed to clean DS's mouth now he was eating food & he advised me to buy some mouthwash for kids & get him to rinse & spit out!! Oh how we laughed!!

lovingmy2 · 29/04/2010 11:30

DS had his first appointment at 6 months. DD is 5 months and is going to her first appointment in Aug with me and DS
