Just intersted really.

My DS is in reception (nearly 5) and all his friends and cousins around similar age have a TV in their rooms but both DH and I refuse to let him have one. He goes up to bed at half six, I read him a story and then he can choose a book to look at (read) before i go back in at 7:15pm to take it off him (usually he has fallen asleep with book on face).

We don't let him play out on the front (even though we live on a close) without me sitting on my chair with him when all the other children on the close are allowed.

We don't let him brush his own teeth either although recently we have let him start brushing them and we finish them off.

even my 17 year old isn't allowed a tv in his room

but we're pretty lax apart from that - you tend to be when you have more - can't remember what ds1 wasn't allowed at 5 it all merges

bibbitybobbityhat · 25/04/2010 20:06

My dd is 9 and none of her friends or cousins of similar age have a tv in their rooms. Where do you live? Am amazed!

I don't let my dc (9 and 7) have aspartame or margarine and I am very a bit fussy about barbecued food.

southeastastra · 25/04/2010 20:07

let them have felt pens

No TV's in bedrooms here.

No Ben10

No LelliKelli or whatever the shite is called

Baileysismyfriend · 25/04/2010 20:08

DD is 11 and not TV here either.

Jaquelinehyde · 25/04/2010 20:08

The DC's are 5 (next month), 4, and 2 (3 in June).

poorbuthappy · 25/04/2010 20:10

Shoes with heels...dd1 is 5 and many of her friends have the shoes with heels (not the dressing up ones for playing princesses, the ones you can get from accessorize sort of thing) and is so desperate to have them...but I just can't let myself buy them.

posieparker · 25/04/2010 20:11

No TVs (8,7,3 and 1), no aspartame, no spreads, no cola, no crappy cartoon channels, no Dr Who(they would get terrible nightmares), only two of my twenty cousins allow tvs in the bedroom but their dcs had them from 2 or 3 years old(wtf?)

SpringHeeledJack · 25/04/2010 20:11

I won't let ds (12) have that Call of Duty game (18) for the x box

Apparently I am the only mother in Christendom who won't let her ds have it

2madboys · 25/04/2010 20:11

DSs 6 and 9. No tv in bedrooms, no DS, no mobile phones.

posieparker · 25/04/2010 20:12

shoes with heels? OMG! dd does have Lellikellys because my dm bought them and they come with make up...

lovingmy2 · 25/04/2010 20:12

Oh i'm feeling more normal now. Northwest England i live. My nephew got a plasma Tv for Christmas this year (he is 5) and his parents said my DS could have his old winnie the pooh TV . We declined politely!

posieparker · 25/04/2010 20:13

ooops, mine have DSs but we do travel long haul at least once a year, er.

posieparker · 25/04/2010 20:13

My cousins whose dcs have TVs live in Newcastle!

lovingmy2 · 25/04/2010 20:15

My Ds isn't allowed fizzy drinks either and has to have some fruit or vegetables with every meal.

OP posts:
mamasmissionimpossible · 25/04/2010 20:16

no E numbers/aspartame/hydrogenated fats or msg here!

lovingmy2 · 25/04/2010 20:16

we have a family Wii which DS loves but only really asks to play on it at weekend then we limit the time he spends on it.

janeite · 25/04/2010 20:16

I-pods
Laptops
TV in room
Games or films that are 'over age'
They were allowed a mobile on starting secondary school.

I am currently evil mother because I refuse to buy GHDs.

janeite · 25/04/2010 20:17

Oh and chewing gum. I am sure they probably have it when not with me now but I still won't buy it, as it is foul stuff.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 25/04/2010 20:17

I don't think I know anyone whose 5yo does have a TV in his/her room. We have a v small portable DVD player and sometimes DS is allowed to take that down to his room and watch a DVD if DH commandeers the television to watch rugby all afternoon, but that's all.

I don't let the DCs have aspartame at home, but don't police what they eat with grandparents or friends.

I like Ben 10 -- if you follow the dialogue it's a cut above the average designed-to-sell-merchandise show. Ben 10 Alien Force is annoying, though, except when it has David McCallum in it.

ds 5 doesnt have a tv in his bedroom.

Some of his friends have nintendo ds ... but he is not getting one for a few years yet..

I dont let him play out alone in the street..

lifeissweet · 25/04/2010 20:20

ds nearly 5

Certainly no tv in room
Only drinks water or milk (he doesn't like juice)
No guns

Think I might be a bit of a meanie.

5inthebed · 25/04/2010 20:21

Posie, what has living in Newcastle got to o with having a TV in their rooms?

My 6 year ol isn't allowed a mobile phone, a few of his friends have them. I really can't see the point of it.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 25/04/2010 20:23

Oh yes, we don't let DS play out on the street, but then we do live on the South Circular Road so I think even the most lax parents would be with us on that one . No computer game thingy of his own for the foreseeable future and I conveniently forget to mention to him that DH and I have a PS2 and a Wii -- I wouldn't object to his playing some games on there but I don't want to encourage it either.
